1B Pairs, class. To introduce active vocabulary.

This activity will also help Pp to develop stretagies for dealing with unknown.

  1. Tell Pp to say the words using the phonetic transcript, then elicit their guesses about their meaning. Draw Pp’s attention to the similarities between Russian and English.

  2. Ask Pp to find these words in the leaflet and check if their guesse were right. Pp find the sentneces, read them aloud and translate into Russian to make sure that the meaning suits the context.

  3. Practice saying the new words.

Background information for the teacher

Crown Jewels – the crowns, swards, jewels and other symbols of power woren or carried by a king or queen on important occasions. They can be seen in a special room in the Tower of London.

2A Pairs, class. To practise readig for specific information.

  1. Tell Pp that they are going to do a short quiz about London.

  2. Set about three minuts for Pp read the leaflet and discuss the answers in pairs.

  3. Check the answers as a whole class.

Answer key: 1 Nelson’s Column 2 The biggest bell in Britain. 3 Tower Bridge. 4 In the Tower of London. 5 The Buckingham Palace.

2B Pairs, class. To personalise the information about London.

  1. Ask Pp what place they would like to visit in Londong, give an example and put Pp to pairs to preapare their answers. In a stronger class you might want to do it on the spot.

  2. Ask every P.

3A Individual, class. To pracise listening for specific information.

  1. Tell Pp that they are going on a guided tour of London. Introduce guide, guided tour if necessary.

  2. Explain that quite often the guide says where to look. Encourage Pp to read the instruction and revise the phrases in bold.

  3. Play the tape and make pauses after a sight is meantioned so that Pp can write down the letter corresponding to the photo. In stronger class you might ask Pp to write the name of the sight.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to our round London sightseeing tour. [Pause filled with the noise of a bus moving along the sctreets of London.]

We’re in Piccadilly circus… now we’re turning left into Regent Street.

Straight ahead you can see Trafalgar Square. Trafalgar Square is a popular place for people to meet. In the middle of the square there is Nelson’s Column, which is 51 m high with four huge lions. We’re going over Wesminster Bridge now. On the left you can see Big Ben. It is the biggest bell in a clock tower in Britain. [Pause filled with the noise of a bus moving along the sctreets of London.]

Now we’re going over Tower Bridge. It is one of the oldest bridges and one of London's best-known buildings. It is over a hundred years old and is often used as a symbol to represent London. [Pause filled with the noise of a bus moving along the sctreets of London.]

Now we’re going away from the City of London. Behind us you can see the walls of the Tower of London. It is a castle next to the River Thames. It is the oldest building in London. The kings and queens of England lived there. It was a castle, a palace, a zoo, and a prison. It is now a museum. The most famous things in the Tower of London are the Crown Jewels. They have the biggest diamond in the world – the Star of Africa. We’re going along Constitution Hill. On the right you can see Buckingham Palace. It is a very famous place in London. It is the home of the Queen. It’s the largest house in London with more than 660 rooms in it. It has an indoor swimming pool and a cinema. [Pause filled with the noise of a bus moving along the sctreets of London.]
