MY NATIVE TOWN TOMSK
Старинные дома и молодые лица, Причудливый узор
грядущего с былым. Студенчество спешит...
И это повторится И завтра, и всегда...
Но Томск неповторим. С. Заплавный
Tomsk, one of the oldest cities of Siberia, was founded in 1604. For two centuries Tomsk was a wooden town. Academician Falk, who visited the town in 1771-72, wrote that the town had "2,274 houses, all wooden, along irregular and usually unpaved streets". He also mentioned the frequent fires in the town:
"Nowhere else do fires occur so often as in Tomsk; and during my stay of a few months there the alarm was sounded ten times". In 1804 Tomsk had 6,776 inhabitants and only 3 houses of stone. Today, centuries later, Tomsk is famous for its wooden architecture. It represents a history of Russian architecture in wood, the most easily obtainable and democratic of building materials. This unique heritage is treated in Tomsk with great care. So called wooden laces make a great impression on everybody. Have you ever admired this wonder?
At the same time at the beginning of the 19th century Tomsk could already be proud of the success in education. It had 55 educational institutions where almost 6,000 pupils studied. Taking into account that 50 thousand people lived in Tomsk we could conclude the following ratio - 1 pupil per 12 tomskovites. It
30
was the level of education which was not reached by any other town of our country including both capitals. That’s the thing Tomsk people could be proud of. So old Tomsk was called the most educated town in Russia. With the opening of the University in 1888 and the Technological Institute, Siberia's second higher school, in 1896, scientists, artists and architects began to come to the town. Cultural life was in full swing and Lunacharsky called Tomsk “Siberian Athens”.
In 1924 Tomsk lost its status of gubernia town. The centre of the gubernia was transferred to rapidly growing Novonikolaevsk ( since 1925 Novosibirsk). In 1944 Tomsk Region was separated from Novosibirsk Region and made an independent territorial unit. The area of the region is more than the area of Italy or Great Britain.
Tomsk suburbs are great. You can’t but admire the nature round Tomsk. But unfortunately there is one great drawback which makes your life in nature unbearable-mosquitos and swarms of midges. And ticks make your walk in the forest just dangerous.
Tomsk has become an important industrial, scientific and cultural centre of Western Siberia with the population more than half a million.
Tomsk plants production is well-known not only in our country but abroad. There are more than 70 industrial enterprises in Tomsk. And their production is exported into many countries, e.g. the production of the Sibcabel plant, Tomsk lamps, different devices and apparatus. In 1954 near Kolpashevo there were got the first litres of Tomsk oil. There is a giant petro-chemical plant in Tomsk. Polypropylene, formalin and methanol are produced here. Now there are joint ventures in Tomsk too.
Tomsk is known as a centre of science. There are many research institutes in Tomsk and their scientists achievements are well-known in our country and abroad. 6 universities train specialists: teachers, doctors, engineers and
31
scientists. Tomsk Universities are always among the top ten Universities of the country. Tomsk Polytechnic University comes the third after the Bauman MSTU and St. Petersburg Technological University. Besides higher schools there are many secondary specialized schools and vocational schools. Each eighth in Tomsk is a student, that's why very often Tomsk is called a students' town. Tomsk students and graduates are proud of their universities.
There are many theatres, Philarmonic Society, the Concert Hall, the Palace of sports, art and local museums, cinemas, libraries and many historical places in Tomsk. The pride of our town is the University library and one of the largest and richest gardens of the world-the Siberian botanical gardens of the University.
Our city is growing with each year. Many new houses and even districts appear in it. It’s getting younger and better. A lot of new fashionable shops, restaurants, cafes, excellent Concert Hall have appeared recently here. There are many people in the streets, especially during the rush hour. The traffic is very heavy. You are welcome to our ancient and ever young city on the bank of the river Tom. Don’t be afraid of Siberian frosts and mosquitos.
TOMSK – A UNIVERSITY CITY
In the middle of the last century Tomsk was called “Siberian Athens”. Indeed, Tomsk was a centre of culture and education of Siberia. The first University in Siberia was founded in Tomsk in 1878. It was opened in 1888. The University is situated in Lenin Street and surrounded by a fine grove. Tomsk is famous for scientists, universities and educational establishments. Now there are 6 universities in Tomsk. In Tomsk every eighth person is a student. Its educational establishments – higher and special secondary – give the country over 25,000 specialists a year. They go to work to all parts of the country. The
32
fame of Tomsk educational establishments is constantly growing. More and more school-leavers come to our town to enter Tomsk universities. The students in Tomsk have everything at their disposal to live and study: hostels, workshops, libraries, laboratories, sport palaces and clubs. Tomsk students and graduates are proud of their town and their universities. After graduating they often come to the town of their youth to say “thank you” to their teachers and Universities. It’s a wonderful tradition.
PLACES OF INTEREST IN TOMSK
Do you like fairy-tales? I guess you do like everybody else. And what about a fairy-tale in life? Come along with me along old streets of Tomsk, for example Krasnoarmeiskaya, Shishkov, Belinskogo and you’ll see a wooden fairy-tale. We can’t but admire “wooden laces”, one of the main sights of Tomsk. And this treasure is treated and guarded with great care in Tomsk.
The history of Tomsk is connected with the names of many outstanding people (e.g. V. Shishkov, G. Batenkov, S. Kirov, V. Kuibyshev). There are monuments to these people in our town. There is a great memorial complex of Glory in Lagerny Sad. The pride of our town is the Siberian botanical gardens of the State University, one of the richest in the world. Tomskovites are also proud of the University library. One of the most favourite places of young people in Tomsk is recently opened monument to Pushkin. The second name of it is the monument of loving couples. They often meet here. It goes without saying that Tomsk theatres, concert halls, cinemas are among the Tomsk sights too. You can also visit numerous cafes, restaurants and other places to enjoy yourself.
33
THE CULTURAL LIFE OF TOMSK
Tomsk has greatly changed since the 1990s. New buildings of peculiar architecture, banks, offices, cafes, big shops have appeared recently. And of course the cultural life has changed too. Though Tomsk was always famous for its theatres. The first theatre in Tomsk was opened in 1850. It was a wooden house. And in 1885 there was built the first stone theatre by a rich merchant Korolev. It was always full. Tomsk is famous as a town of theatre-goers. That’s why many theatres from other towns come on tour to Tomsk. Now besides the drama theatre which was built in the 1970s there are many other theatres. But unfortunatelly there is no opera theatre. Speaking about the cultural life of Tomsk you can’t but mention the famous University choir. Many countries admired its great art. But young people prefer to go to the cinema. Many famous musicians, singers, actors, come to our town. And it goes without saying you can ejoy yourself in Tomsk cafes, restaurants which are numerous. You can always find something to your taste in our ancient Tomsk.

I must learn that I cannot be loved by everyone. That is the ideal. In our world it is not often found. I can be the finest plum in the world, ripe, juicy, and offer myself to all. But I must remember that there will be people who do not like plums.
I must understand that if I am the world's finest plum and someone I love does not like plums, I have the choice of becoming a banana. But I must know that if I choose to become a banana, I will be a second rate banana. But I can always be the best plum.
38
I must realize that if I choose to be a second rate banana, I run the risk of the loved one finding me second rate and - wanting only the best, discarding me. I can then spend my life trying to become the best banana - which is impossible if I am a plum - or I can seek again to be the best plum.
In other words, if you are a plum - be the best plum you can possibly be - You are the best you.
