3—MEDICINAL FORMULAE

N.B.—These medicines ought to be made as freshly as possible—the infusions and decoctions never in quantities to last longer than four days.

An appropriate diet should be planned, and strictly adhered to, in all cases of ill-health.

Stomach and Liver

Equal parts of Golden Seal

American Mandrake

Gentian

Angelica

To 1 ounce of the mixture add 1 1/2 pints of water, boil, and simmer to 1 pint. Wineglass doses thrice daily.

 

Flatulence

Balm

1/2 ounce

Angelica

1/2 ounce

Pennyroyal

1/2 ounce

Cloves

1 drachm

An infusion in 11 pints boiling water to be taken in wineglass doses (warm) as required.

 

Blood

Blue Flag Root

1/2 ounce

Burdock

1/2 ounce

Red Clover

1/2 ounce

Yellow Dock

1/2 ounce

Sarsaparilla

3/4 ounce

Wild Ginger

1 drachm

Boil in 3 pints of water, simmering down to 2 pints. Dose, 3 tablespoons,

Bronchial

Horehound

1 ounce

Coltsfoot

1 ounce

Marshmallow

1/2 ounce

Valerian

1/2 ounce

Pleurisy Root .

1/2 ounce

Boil gently in 3 pints of water for 10 minutes. Dose, wineglassful three or four times daily.

Rheumatism

Equal parts of Black Cohosh

Poke Root

Prickly Ash

Agrimony

Yarrow

One ounce of the mixture to 1 pint of water, boiled, and simmered for 10 minutes. Dose, wineglassful three times daily.

 

Laxative [mild)

Dandelion Root

1 ounce

Mountain Flax

1 ounce

Golden Seal

1 ounce

Cloves

1/2 ounce

Boil in two pints of water and simmer for 10 minutes. A wineglass to teacup dose, warm, at bedtime.

 

Kidney and Bladder

Buchu

1 ounce

Parsley Piert

Wild Carrot

Decoction of 3 pints simmered to 2 pints in wineglass doses 3 or 4: times daily.

 

Nervine

Valerian

1 ounce

Scullcap

1 ounce

Mistletoe

1/2 ounce

Wood Betony

1/2 ounce

Vervain

1/2 ounce

Boil slowly in three pints of water for 10 minutes. Dose, wineglassful thrice daily.

Composition Powder

Bayberry Bark (powdered) 1 ounce

Wild Ginger

1/2 ounce

Cayenne

1 drachm

A teaspoonful of the mixture to a teacupful of boiling water is taken warm at bed-time to ward off the effects of chill, and as a general stimulant.

Coffin's Sarsaparilla Compound

"Take of sarsaparilla-root and sassafras-chips, sliced, of each one ounce; snake-root, bruised, liquorice-root, sliced, of each half-an-ounce; macerate them in one quart of water for ten minutes, then take out the sarsaparilla and bruise it, return it to the liquor, and boil for ten minutes; let it stand till cool, then strain. Dose, a wineglassful three or four times a day."

4.—TOILET RECIPES

Tooth Powder

Equal parts of Orris Root (powdered)

Bayberry Bark

Bistort Root

Prepared chalk

To Darken Grey Hair

Grey hair may be gradually and harmlessly darkened by brushing regularly and thoroughly with the ounce to pint infusion of Red Sage. Both growth and texture also benefit.

 

Shampoo (General)

Balm

1/2 ounce

Rosemary

1/2 ounce

Melilot

1/2 ounce

Soapwort

1/2 ounce

Tie up the herbs in a linen bag and pour on them 1 gallon of boiling water. When cool enough apply all over the scalp with a cup for several minutes, massaging well with the finger-tips.

5. -CULINARY HERBS

In addition to Celery Seed, Pennyroyal and Red Sage, which have also definite medicinal purposes and are dealt with in the dictionary, the following list includes the remainder of the herbs used in the kitchen. In addition to being valuable as seasonings, their qualities as digestives make it desirable that they should be added to dishes wherever possible. The slightly medicinal action which entitles these culinary herbs to consideration as aids to digestion is shown :

Basil: Aromatic, carminative, cooling.
