A year has passed since I left school. What has changed since then? Last August I entered the Institute of Foreign Languages. In five years I shall be a teacher of the English language. By the time I graduate from the Institute I shall have been already learning it for 10 years. It’s long enough, isn’t it? I have been already studying at the Institute for some months. All this time we work much at the language. Of course, I had been learning the language for 5 years at school but it was only the beginning. In a few days I am finishing the first year. Now I am taking my exams. I have already passed two exams in English and History. We shall take our last exam on Friday. It’s good that we shall have passed it by the end of the week, as I am going to my friend to Grodno. Now Kate studies at the University. Two years ago she left school in Minsk. She lived next door to me. But then her parents moved to Crondo. Kate is a second – year student of the Philological Faculty.

Betty watched her new, good looking neighbour every day. She watched him leave the house every morning. She watched him come home from work every evening. She took photos of his friends when they visited him. She took photos of him in his garden. She watched him all the time, but he didn’t know.

One Saturday morning he left his house at ten o’clock, and Betty decided to follow him. He did his shopping and then went into a video shop and got two videos. After that he began to walk up the road back to his house. Betty passed him and arrived at her house a few minutes before him. She waited for him to turn the corner and then she bumped into him. He dropped his shopping bag and the food fell onto the road.

‘Oh, I’m very, very sorry,’ said Betty. ‘Please let me help you.’

‘Don’t worry,’ said the young man.

‘I can manage.’

‘No, really, I feel terrible. All your food is on the road. You can’t eat it now said Betty.

Betty introduced herself, and told him she was his neighbour. Then she asked him to come round for dinner at her house that evening. ‘I’ve got lots of food. I’d really like to cook for you,’ she said. ‘I feel so bad about this.’ Betty wanted the young man to accept her offer, but he did not.

‘OK, but I want to pay for the food,’ explained Betty, but again he said no.

Although he didn’t want any help, Betty carried some of the shopping to his front door. She wanted him to invite her inside, but he didn’t. He just said, ‘Thank you, and don’t worry. I’ll get a hamburger later.’

Betty was very angry that her plan hadn’t worked, and she went to her usual place by the window and started watching him again.

BINGO COMES TO MY HELP

Night came on. My horse walked nearer to me and stood with his head down. He felt that somewhere not far from us, wolves were gathering. And there I lay, quite helpless. The horse saw the wolves first. Though his terrified snort drove them back, they came nearer next time and sat around me.

I shouted, shook my free hand at them, yet the wolves came nearer and nearer as I grew weaker and weaker.

But suddenly they jumped back. One of the wolves fell on the snow dead. I thought I was dreaming. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Bingo! It was my dog Bingo who had killed that terrible wolf. He, clever dog, felt that I was in danger, and had come from the camp to save me. Later my friends told me that Bingo had looked for me everywhere, but could not find me. Then suddenly he had run out of the house and all their efforts to stop him had been in vain.
