PR in Entertainment, Sports and Tourism

Publicizing individuals and promoting entertainment constitute the aspect of contemporary PR practice that comes closest to the traditional mantle of press agentry. This work requires intense contact with the media, by telephone and mail and in person. Name recognition is its primary goal.

The impact of television on the field of personality promotion is immense. An unknown person who appears on a nationally distributed television show may become an almost instant celebrity. PR firms specializing in personality buildup have staffs that book clients – show-business peopl e, politicians, sports figures, and authors of promotional-type books in particular – in a highly organized manner for TV and radio talk shows. Distribution of news items about personalities to print media columnists and electronic media commentators, and the scheduling of interviews with newspapers and magazines, also are major functions. So are PR tours by film and television stars.

Promotion of entertainment events is a many-faceted activity, intensely competitive because many events compete for the consumer’s time and money. Exposure in the print and electronic media is fundamental. The success of theatrical engagements, fairs and exhibitions, and entertainment centers such as Disney World depends on their PR and publicity programs.

Professional and big-time college sports is another category in which energetic PR efforts are necessary. Every professional team has its PR specialist, and athletic departments of large universities have their sports information directors.

Sports promotion is an aspect of the PR profession that relies heavily on publicity and promotion to foster the brand equity of teams, conferences, types of sports, and specific athletes. As professional, collegiate, and amateur sports functions assume an increasingly important role in society and culture, sports organizations and athletes face increasing scrutiny from media and society. A scan of the news on almost any day reveals events from the sports pages that are now making the front page, the business page, and the top of the broadcast instead of being covered only on the sports page.

Closely related to entertainment and sports is travel PR, because the travel industry is also competing for the public’s recreation dollars. Tourism in general continues to withstand tremendous challenges and remains robust overall in many nations’ economies. The growth of travel and tourism PR parallels the industry.

A multilayered distribution system of sellers and buyers of travel products makes travel and tourism big business for PR. Travel suppliers may have PR representation “in house” or may contract for repre sentation with an independent firm specializing in travel and tourism PR.

Media relations with the travel industry press as well as with the consumer travel press constitute an essential element of travel and tourism PR. A traditional tool used by practitioners in conducting media relations is the working press trip or “junket” whereby travel journalists either indiv idually or in groups experience the sellers’ travel product as a consumer tourist would but at free or reduced costs arranged by the practitioner. Besides generating publicity in the media, PR techniques include direct communication tactics such as brochures, newsletters, Web sites, e-mail, and other Internet-based communications, as well as sales promotional items and giveaways; interpersonal and group communication tactics,
