Text III. A True Story

This seems unbelievable but it’s a true story in fact. A farmer was working in the fields with his tractor. The tractor crashed and he fell out and landed on the ground unconscious. As he fell, his mobile phone fell out of his pocket. Soon after, a bird that was flying around the fields saw the phone and started pecking it with its beak. Amazingly it dialled the number 999 and soon the emergency services arrived to help the farmer.

Will Knott: John what?

Will Knott: No, I’m Knott.

John Watt: Well, tell me your name, then.

Will Knott: Will Knott.

John Watt: Why not?

Will Knott: My name’s Knott.

John Watt: Not what?

Will Knott: Not What, Knott.

John Watt: What?!

Text V. Betty Smith

I am Betty Smith. My full name is Elizabeth Louise Smith. I am twenty-two. I am a college graduate. I am a writer, just a beginner, you know. I have a lot of friends. Most of them are my schoolmates. My best companions are two girlfriends. They are very kind, jolly and well-bred.

My brother-in-law, Henry Sandford, is married to my elder sister Helen. I am a member of her family. My brother-in-law is a doctor. He has a mother, but he has no father. My sister is a housewife. They have only one child, Benny. Benny is my nephew. He is four. Sometimes he is naughty. He is fond of birds and animals. We have white mice, a hedgehog and a parrot in the house. Now Benny is eager to have a rabbit. But his mother is against it. We have no peace because of all Benny’s animals and birds.

Text VI. The Loving Husband

A man and his wife go on holiday to Jerusalem. While they are there, the man passes away. The undertaker tells the wife, “You can have him shipped home for five thousand dollars, or you can bury him here for one hundred and fifty dollars.”

“I think I'll have him shipped home,” she says.

“Why would you spend five thousand dollars to ship your husband home when it would be wonderful to be buried here, and it would only cost you one hundred and fifty dollars?” the undertaker asks. And the woman replies, “Long ago a man died here, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. I just don't want to take any chances.”

Text VII. The Perfect Son

Two men are talking about their children. “You know,” says the first man. “I have the perfect son.”

“Really?” says the second man. “Does he smoke?” “Never!" replies the first man. "Well, does he drink?" the second man asks. "No, he’s never touched a drop of alcohol.”

“That’s pretty impressive,” the second man says. “What about going out? Does he come home late?” “Nope!” the first man says. “He's always in bed nice and early, and he gets up really early too.” “That’s great. I guess you really do have the perfect son. So, how old is he?” the second man asks. And the first man replies, “He’ll be six months old next Friday.”
