The Orenburg Institute of Railway Communication was founded in 1957 by Nikolay Nikolayevich Lyashenko. Now the institute includes the Faculty of Higher Professional Education, Orenburg Railway College and Orenburg Medical College.

In 1987 the department of technical disciplines was founded. Later it was renamed into the department of general academic and professional disciplines. Now the teaching staff of the institute comprises more than 20 full-time and part-time lecturers. The institute has all the necessary laboratories with modern equipment for high quality educational process in such subjects as physics, electrical engineering, chemical, electrical machinery, automation, study of the strength of materials, hydraulics, heating and theoretical mechanics, machine parts, building materials and so on.

Alongside with the extra-mural department, full-time department was opened in 2006. For the first two years full-time students do a training course in Orenburg, and then they continue their education in the basic university in Samara.

At this time, training is carried out over nine licensed educational programs of higher education. From 1974 to 2010 the Orenburg Institute of Railway Communication trained over four thousand engineers, about 75% of them work in the South Urals Railroad now.
