Analysis “Dangerous Corner” Alex Chudinovskih ED-512
J.B. Priestley is one of the outstanding English authors of his time. His Time Plays brought him world fame. He was the first one who used time tricks and flashback in his works, which made the break in the means of development of the character. Characters of his plays appear in a new light before our eyes, and the time trick allows us to see them in a new, deeper level.
The extract under analysis is taken from the play “Dangerous corner”. According to its title we can guess that the play describes some dangerous situation, it implies that “dangerous corner” is a dead end, a difficult situation, which has no way out, like “to be in a tight corner”. However, to my mind there can be one more interpretation of the title: “corner” – like a turning point in one’s life – some people have courage to turn around it, to face all the difficulties and danger and cope with them, but others haven’t, they are afraid to lose their illusions, to lose the aim of the life.
So we can see that the play deals with mental topic. The situation described in the play deals with the state of affairs in the family of Caplans. From the beginning of the extract we can see the development of two sub-plots: wireless play, and the situation on the foreground, which are mixed.
The wireless play is called “The Sleeping Dog”. As the characters explain, the sleeping dog is the truth, which you shouldn’t disturb. But not all characters agree with this statement. Robert Caplan starts investigating the trifling facts about his brother’s suicide. A big quarrel arisen leads to Robert’s suicide.
From the stylistic point of view, a play is a stylized dialogue, stylized because of the effect of natural speech: a lot of elliptical structures, interruptions, and it is the peculiarity of the drama works. One more feature is the language used: I mean a harmonic mixture of bookish and colloquial style, and of course the author’s remarks in the brackets.
In the structure of the extract we can find exposition, which is the preface for the quarrel; intrigue, which is the quarrel itself, climax – the revolver shot, and the denouement – the second variant of events.
The first part produces the effect of the idle talk mostly thanks to author’s remarks: “who doesn’t care”, “in her best childish manner”, or “still fiddling with the wireless” – they imply that the characters pretend to be not so deeply interested in the topic discussed.
If the fist part is rather calm, everyone makes the air that this topic doesn’t touch their relations, the atmosphere of the second part changes greatly. It is already the beginning of the quarrel, and the devices used there are aimed to show the growth of the tension. Where epifora “I agree. – You agree!” or anadiplosis “You’ll get no sympathy from me, Caplan. – Sympathy from you!” with an exclamation mark at the end and addressing raise the tone of the speech to the level of insults: “You are a thief, a cheat, a liar, and a dirty cheap seducer. - And you are a fool, Caplan.”, where we can see such a device as anti-climax.
Then, with the help of antithesis: “a fool’s paradise” – “a fool’s hell” – the author draws our attention to the second concept – the world of illusions. “A fool’s paradise” stands for the world of illusions, a world, which Robert has built for himself, because he didn’t want to face up the reality, and searching for the truth he ruined his world.
In the third part we can follow step-by-step Robert’s perception of his new situation. As the situation became clearer in his mind he became more and more desperate because of losing his illusions. We can see it even by repetitions of different kind, ellipsis, parallel syntax that breaks the monotonousness of natural speech. Intonational structure, harsh words like “bloody glands”, “fool”, anti-climax “damned silly little squable” and authors remarks in the brackets “terribly excited now”, “in a frenzy”, “crazy now” let us feel Robert’s pain because of his loss. And what is even

Анализ Dangerous Corner
By John Boynton Priestley
Александрова Айсена
John Boynton Priestley is one of the outstanding English authors. His Time Plays brought him world fame. He was the first one who used time tricks and flashback in his works, which made the break in the means of development of the character. Priestley`s most famous novels are They Walk In The City, Angel Pavement, Wonder Hero, Far Away, Bright Day, but I`d like to analyze his creation which was his first effort in dramatic art, the extract from the play Dangerous Corner.
The extract under analysis is taken from the play “Dangerous corner”. According to this title we can come to mind that this play will be about interesting and dangerous situations with exiting ending. From the very beginning we can see the development of two sub-plots: wireless play and the situation on the foreground, which are mixed. The wireless play is called “The Sleeping Dog”. That is mean the truth is a sleeping dog, the truth can be dangerous, hurt you, kill you. Truth is a dangerous corner. The society of several men and women sitting in a cosy drawing-room and idly discussing the wireless lay they have just heard is described in the plot. Initially the conversation goes around the play but gradually it approaches the theme of truth and lie, Robert starts investigating the trifling facts about his brother’s suicide, then the dispute leads to Robert’s suicide.
Speeches in the play are the dialogues. There is a mixture bookish and colloquial style. Plot is quite simple. Exposition is the preface for the quarrel, climax is the revolver shot, and the denouement is the second variant of events. In the first part we can mostly see authors’ opinions, such as «who doesn’t care», «in her best childish manner», or «still fiddling with the wireless» – they imply that the characters pretend to be not so deeply interested in the topic discussed. In second parts atmosphere changes, and the devices used there are aimed to show the growth of the tension. Where epifora « I agree. – You agree! » or anadiplosis «You’ll get no sympathy from me, Caplan. – Sympathy from you!». Antithesis:» a fool’s paradise» - «a fool’s hell”- the author draws our attention to the second concept -the world of illusions. «A fool’s paradise» stands for the world of illusions, a world, which Robert has built for himself, because he didn’t want to face up the reality, and searching for the truth he ruined his world. Robert started regretting the loss of his illusions: «…I’ve lived among illusions - well, what if I have? They’ve given me hope and courage. They’ve helped me to live. I suppose we ought to get all that from faith in life. But I haven’t got any. No religion or anything. Just this damned farmyard to live in. That’s all... But it didn’t look too bad. I’d my little illusions, you see». It was his last step towards the chasm, where he fell after he had shot himself. At this point we can understand his state of emotions, his despair that led him to suicide.
In general, sometimes it’s necessary to keep the «cruel» truth in yourself for good outcome.

Analysis “Dangerous corner” by John Boyton Priestley
The main idea of the play.
The text I am going to comment on is a story by John Boyton Priestley “Dangerous corner”. John Boynton Priestley (1894 - 1984) is one of the outstanding English authors of today. His early books (1922-26) were of a critical nature. It was the success of his novel "The Good Companions" (1929) which brought him world fame. In early thirties Priestley began his work as a dramatist. "Dangerous Corner" (1932) — one of the series of Seven Time Plays — was his first effort in dramatic art. Dangerous corner was premiered in May 1932 by Tyrone Guthrie at the Lyric Theatre, London, and filmed by Phil Rosen .
The plot of the text revolves around the meeting of several man and women. In the beginning it is just harmless conversation between them. Then gradually heroes of the play faced with discovery of truth. It turns out that all of them lie each other. Judging by the title of the play, we can guess that the play describes perilous situation. This means that “Dangerous corner” is blind alley, that there is the only way out. The dialogues contain some pejorative words such as: cheater, dirty cheap, fool, silly, obscene lunatic, greedy little cat, hysterical young pervert.
The main characters are Robert Caplan, Freda Caplan, Betty Whitehouse, Gordon Whitehous, Olwen Peel, Charles Trevor Stanton and Maud Mockridge. Characters can be characterizedby their words or the words of others. The protagonist of the play is Robert Caplan .His outlook on life is too naïve. He lives in a world of illusions. Then Robert looked at the world in other way and faced the truth. Throughout the play we see how he is changing. Finally, Robert Caplan was very disappointed and commits suicide.
The main idea of “Dangerous corner” is that people have different situations. The most of them is difficult. And there are a lot of violence and cruelty in the world. Therefore, people create their own illusions. That makes easier to live. People believe in good things. Also, people want to believe in miracles. It makes the world a better, easier, more interesting and more excited.

Analysis of “The Escape” by Somerset Maugham
W. Somerset Maugham (1874—1965) was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his time and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s. During the war, Maugham's best-known novel, Of Human Bondage (1915) was published. This was followed by another successful books, The Moon and Sixpence (1919), The Razor's Edge (1945), Maugham also developed a reputation as a fine short-story writer, one story, Rain, which appeared in The Trembling of a Leaf(1921), was also turned into a successful feature film. Also he wrote many other outstanding works.
The story under the analysis has a quite simple plot. Story begins with the exposition, where author thinks that marriage should be inevitable, if woman settles steal your last name. But author was lucky to know the man who succeeded to avoid unwanted marriage. Author tells us story of this man: “I have only once known a man who in such circumstances managed to extricate himself. His name was Roger Charing”. He met a Ruth Barlow– a widow, which had mourned two husbands. She had splendid dark eyes and it was her only advantage(merit). Roger and Ruth were happy and intended to marry as soon as possible. Suddenly Mr. Charing understood who Ruth Barlow is, and, suddenly, fell out of love. There starts a complication of the story. Roger continued to be attentive to Ruth, to all her wishes, he took her to dine at restaurants, he sent her flowers, he was sympathetic and charming as gentleman. Tried to escape a marriage, he found a plausible excuse– they need a perfect house to live together. The searches of this house are taken for two years. At last Ruth lost her temper and asked Roger to marry her. It is a climax of the story. He said that that would married the very moment they find a house. Ruth did not watch the houses any more, she took to her bed. There begins a falling actions. Roger continued to be gallant. Every day he wrote and told her that he had a new order of houses, one of them can turn out a perfect house. After a week he received a letter, where Ruth tells that she is going to marry today. It is a resolution. Roger immediately sends his answer to her, his heart is broken, but her happiness must be his first consideration, that is why he sent her seven orders to view.
The main idea of the story is quite obvious, you should think carefully before doing something. Moreover, do not be hurry in making decision of marriage. Roger Charing was blinded of splendid dark eyes and the game of his ego– to protect a little thing- Ruth Barlow from all the hazards of life. This fact that Maugham raised such problems in his novels, makes ones imperishable. Moral of “The escape” is clear for readers and the ironical presentation of it helps readers to see all this situation in details.
Plot structure of this story is chorological and five-staged. But we see unusual type of exposition- we see two letters instead of author’s narration. Conflict is internal, because it is in the relationships of two main characters. A plot is unified, every episode logically relates to each other. The setting for the story is not named, but readers can suggest it is one of cities of England.
There are two main characters– Mrs. Ruth Barlow and Mr. Roger Charing. Author used two types of methods of characterization– characterization by the author and characterization through action. So, Mr. Roger Charing is a strong, rich young man, who is trying to be gentleman in every situation. Mrs. Ruth Barlow is unfortunate woman, who was the widow twice and her splendid dark eyes “seemed to be ever on the point of filling with tears” and “they were the most moving I ever saw”. Author outline her bad luck, saying: “She was apparently one of those unfortunate persons with whom nothing by any chance goes right. If she married a husband he beat her; if she employed a broker he cheated her; if she engaged a cook she drank. She never had a little lamb but it was sure to die” Further the narrator sugg

suggested that Ruth as hard as nails and she is scheming. There was some incident. He told that the first time he met her they had played bridge together. When she was his partner she trumped his best card. Afer loss, she promised him to send a money, but she never returned it. Both main characters are round, because Ruth and Roger showed all the sides of her nature.
Type of this text is narration. This is a third person narration. The story is told from the point of view a friend of main character, which stays consistent throughout the story. I guess, his point of view is not reliable, because it is very subjective, narrator sympathizes with his friend and it prevents him from understanding that Roger should not have done so. If there is a story by Ruth, we would know a story of two-year cheating and come-down.
Title of the story is “The Escape”. Do you agree that tt does not require any explanation?
The language is neutral language. We see clichés (“your news shatters me”, “I shall never forget over the blow”),
The general tone of the story is ironic. It seems, each literary device was used for emphasize the humoristic tone. It is worth to remember how Roger calls his fiancé– poor dear, little thing. From the very beginning of the text, we know that marriage is something horrible and every man has to avoid it. (“I have always been convinced that if a woman Once made up her mind to marry a man nothing but instant flight could save him.”). The similes such as “He went down like a row of ninepins” shows how comical this situation is.
The epithets: “helpless little thing”, “rotten time”, “unfortunate”, “poor dear” and words such as “sufferings”, “hazards” shows hopelessness of Ruth’s life.
“He took her here, there, and everywhere.” This parallel construction shows Roger’s desire to marry Ruth.
The usage of repetition and parallel construction prove non-interest of Roger to all offers: “Sometimes they were too large and sometimes they were too small, sometimes they were too far from the centre of the things and sometimes they were too close; sometimes they were too expensive and sometimes they wanted too many repairs; sometimes they were too stuffy and sometimes they were too airy; sometimes they were too dark and sometimes they were too bleak”
I like the message of this story, but I do not like Ruth and Roger. Ruth is narrow-minded woman, who tries to take a status of married woman at any price. Roger is not fair man. Undoubtedly, he saved his social “face” and position, but he lay Ruth for two years! This story is about the eternal problem of relationships between men and women, which never be solved!

Analysis ‘The Escape’ by Somerset Maugham
The story “The Escape” written by an English writer Somerset Maugham is under the interpretation. Somerset Maugham a famous English writer, he was born in 1874 in Paris. He received his medical degree, but he never practiced medicine, the ambition to write dominated his entire life.
The story ‘The Escape’ the author uses the first-person narrative structure. The main heroes here are Roger Charing and Ruth Barlow. To describe them, Maugham uses the direct characterization. The author wrote this story the sense of the humour.
In this story the author tells us about poor woman, who wants to marry a man; and about man, who the first falls in love in her but then falls out of love and the break up.
The author described a Ruth Barlow with some irony. He said that she had a gift, and this gift was of pathos. And this gift that renders most men defenceless. The author also uses repetition of the words “pathos”, “pathetic” in the description of this woman. And also ‘… poor dear, her suffering had been more than anymore should be asked to bear …’. The author said that Ruth was twice a widow, and he think that Roger is the next victim. He described her like a poor woman and he felt a pity for her.
In the begin of the story the author uses some lexical and stylistic devices, such as metaphor talking about marriage as a dangerous thing, for example, ‘flight could save him’, ‘the inevitable loom’, he also we can add a direct speech, such as, ‘a friend of him’ and a simple emotive epithet ‘women are fickle’, ‘callous’, ‘rotten’ he are used it speaking about Ruth. His humour here is in the fact that the poor friend came to what he had run away from, so this is a situational humour. And also we can add that the author uses the figurative simile, for example, ‘He went down like a row of ninepins’, ‘as hard as nails’ and epithet “defenceless” used towards the men. Also he gives a direct description of Ruth’s eyes using the epithets ‘splendid’, ‘moving’, ‘big’, ‘lovely’, a detached epithet ‘poor dear’, and it is all in the ironic way.
In the text we can see that the author attitude towards the Ruth ironically, he invented some nicknames such as, ‘she never had a lamb’.
On the text the author used a many metaphors, for example, ‘stand between the hazards of life and this helpless little thing’, ‘Roger’s heart-strings’, ‘swore a solemn oath’, ‘assess her wounded feelings at an immoderately high figure’. I think that also we can add that the author used a anaphors, for example, ‘they … they’, ‘sometimes … sometimes’.
The climax in this story it when Ruth asked Roger about marriage, ‘Do you want to marry me or not’ and the Roger kept his position like a gentlemen. And in the conclusion it was Ruth’s letters, I think Roger was very happy.
In conclusion I want to say that Roger’s behavior was good and bad way. Bad way because he could tell her that he fall out of love her. And then she would not have lost so much time to him. And good way was his behaved as gentlemen. But all this was sly act. I think that nobody would have guessed it. He did everything like she left him, because he did not want to hurt her feelings.
But I think that it was wrong way. People should not do that like a Roger. His action can tell everything about his qualities. I think that he sly and selfish, and he does everything that to be well himself.

“The Escape”
The text I am going to analyze is a short story called “The Escape” written by Somerset Maugham. William Somerset Maugham was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular and famous writers of his century.
This story tells us about one couple, who loved each other and decided to get married as soon as they will find a place to live in. And it was Ruth’s third marriage, and Roger’s friend doubted the fact that she really loves him. But one day Roger has fell out of love with woman. So he’s been trying to postpone wedding via searching for every blemish even not existing ones in houses they were suggested to buy. They spent whole two years looking for perfect house but they never found one. Ruth started to feel bad and then she took to her bed. After a little time past she wrote Roger that she’s getting married with other man.
I think action takes place in the first part of 20th century. The story told in a kind of a first person narration, but narrator tells us about two other persons: “I have always been convinced…”; “Roger kept his own council”. Narrator doesn’t play leading part but he talks to readers and describes events of the story, but his point of view doesn’t influence on readers. Maugham’s language is simple, clear and easy to understand.
I think conflict of the story is combination of internal and external conflicts. Internal conflict: feelings of Roger. And external conflict: Roger’s attempts to avoid marriage. Plot of the story is chronological and develops steadily. We can divide text on introduction, complication and conclusion. Introduction – beginning of the text, where narrator describes his thoughts about Roger and Ruth; complication – when Roger and Ruth fall in love and when Roger realizes that he has fall out of love; conclusion – when Roger receives letter from Ruth. If we will compare beginning and the end of the text we will see that they are absolutely different. That’s pretty interesting, to my mind, that text gradually changes as text develops. In the beginning we see that narrator explains his thoughts about marriage and relationships in common, in the end we see two different letters from Ruth and Roger, and in the middle – description of Ruth’s and Roger’s relations and life.
Characters of the story are very interesting too. Let’s start with narrator. We don‘t know his name but we do know what he thinks about Ruth and Roger, and relationship in general. At first he describes them, that how we know about their background, I think it is the main purpose of this character. So it helps us to make up our mind looking back at their past not only on their present.
So what about Ruth and Roger? I think that Ruth is a woman of her time and her behavior is can be understandable. But narrator consider her as a not very intelligent woman, he uses repetition of the words “pathos”, “pathetic” in the description of this woman. She’s been widow twice, and she’s not so young that’s why she really wants to get married, though she doesn’t love him for real. And Roger. Well, he is just a man who fall in and out of love, but was too coward to say Ruth the truth. But he seems to be a nice man; he sympathizes Ruth and went he fell out of love he kept being with her, gallant like a gentleman.
Author uses indirect way of characterization, narrator describes what he thinks of them, but he never says if characters are good or bad, author let his personages act and speak what gives very good opportunity to readers draw their own conclusion and own meaning of each personage.
In conclusion I would like to say that this story is pretty good like other stories of Somerset Maugham. I like the way he writes, I can easily imagine everything he describes in my mind. And this one it is quite true to life story, I think, there are a lot of couples around the world who got same problem and just putting up with it.

Analysis “The Escape” by Somerset Maugham
William Somerset Maugham(25 January 1874- 16 December 1965), a famous English novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during 1930s. In 1915 he published a novel that had been in preparation for many years. Called “Of Human Bondage” it was received by critics with great respect. Over the years, it has become a modern classic. Many popular successes followed its publication: “Ashenden”, “Moon and Sixpence” , “Cakes and Ale”,etc. The text under consideration is a The escape. This is the text I am going to comment.
The escape is one of the famous short stories by Somerset Maugham. The story tells of the couple who decided to get married. It is about a man and a woman. Their names are Roger Charing and Ruth Barlow. At the beginning of the text, the author touches the theme of marriage. And that he have always been convinced that if a woman once made up her mind to marry a man nothing but instant flight could save him. Not always that. And narrator has only once known a man who in such circumstances managed to extricate himself. And from that moment begins the story. Roger and Ruth are main characters. The couple wanted to buy a new house. After that they want to get married. They looked at more houses and more houses. For two years they looked at houses. But it was very hard to find anything that was quite satisfactory. Roger always found a fault that made the house unsuitable. It ends up that Ruth goes from Roger. She send him a letter.
The author touches the subject in the story of human relationships and the psychology of behavior in a given situation. In this case, the relationship between man and woman. Roger Charing and Ruth Barlow. Through the story we can see the development of their relations. The problem is that if a woman wants to marry a man, it is a man’s hazard. He has to find the way out of the situation. The man, Roger Charing, is an aging fellow with a good fortune behind him. The woman, Ruth Barlow, is a shrewd, manipulating young widow, determined to get married again to prospective man. But, then, on a sudden, Roger fell out of love. He understood that he does not want to marry Ruth. So he made up a plan of making her go away. And it worked.
The story can be divided into four main parts: the exposition, passages about Ruth’s and Roger’s love, Roger falls out of love and the break-up. In the exposition the author uses metaphor talking about marriage as a dangerous thing:
I have always been convinced that if a woman once made up her mind to marry a man nothing but instant flight could save him.
Not always that; for once a friend of mine, seeing the inevitable loom menacingly before him…
The epithets instant flight, the inevitable loom, menacingly show us fear and trembling of such men.
Also, the author uses direct speech, expressing the thoughts of a friend of mine, a friend of him.
And a simple emotive epithet:
…women are fickle, he said and in twelve months she will have forgotten all about me.
There is also a direct description of Ruth’s eyes: splendid, moving, big and lovely.
The essence of the story is that Roger and Ruth have a different view of the relationship. Everyone likes the first stage of relations between man and woman: courting, to be at the centre of attention, flowers, sweets etc. But over the time, romance may to be end. The man seeking a way out, he craves for new emotions. But woman believes that the outcome of the relationship should be a wedding. And the story “The escape” is an example of such a mismatch. From the very beginning the author convinces us that if a woman once made her mind to marry a man nothing but instant flight could save him.
In conclusion, I would like to say that the story made me think about relationship more. It turned out that Roger Charing was a very clever and cunning man. He knew all of the following Ruth’s steps. He pretended that he was still in love until he received the letter. I co

Analysis of the story «The Escape» by Somerset Maugham
William Somerset Maugham is one of the best known English writers of the 20th century. He was not only a novelist, but also a one of the most successful dramatist and short-story writers. Maugham wants the readers to draw their own conclusion about the characters and events described in his novels. In general, Maugham's novels and short stories could be characterized by great narrative facility, an ironic point of view, cosmopolitan settings, and an astonishing understanding of human nature. His reputation as a novelist is based on the following prominent books: “Of Human Bondage”; “The Moon and Sixpence”; and “The Razor's Edge”.
«The Escape» is a short story of the socio psychological type. The plot of the story is quite simple but interesting to read. Stories of this type are common for W. S. Maugham, who likes to depict and satirize existing social vices through feelings and relationships of his characters. To stress this fact, the exact time and place of action are not indicated in the story, which gives it the impression of a faceless common occurrence, possible to happen at any time in any place. “The Escape” is about Roger and Ruth, their complicated relations. So they are the main characters. Roger is an aging fellow with a good fortune. Ruth is a shrewd, manipulating young widow, determined to get married to a prospective man. Ruth manages to win Rogers feelings at first, but as their romance goes on, he falls out of love. To describe them, Maugham uses the direct characterization. And Maugham manages to tell this story with the sense of humor and in a very interesting way. The story has a straight line narrative structure, the author is the observer-writer, he uses the first-person narrative structure, but the narrator is a secondary personage in his story.
The story can be divided into four main parts: the exposition, passages about Ruth’s and Roger’s love, Roger falls out of love and the break-up. The idea of the story is addressed to women, the author implies that men are not that easy to manipulate. The exposition depicts Roger and Ruth as a loving couple and reveals the ironic attitude of the author to their match. In the exposition the author uses metaphor talking about marriage as a dangerous thing (“flight could save him”, “the inevitable loom”), he also uses direct speech (expressing the thoughts of “a friend of him”) and a simple emotive epithet (“women are fickle”). His humor here is in the fact that the poor friend came to what he had run away from, so this is a situational humor. The development of the action starts as Roger falls out of love and the narrator leads the reader throughout the two year period of their house hunting. He kept on taking care of her not even presenting her any signs to doubt in his love. He didn’t let the agents stop searching the house, trying Ruth’s patience. The repetition used by the author prove non-interest of Roger to all offers: “Sometimes they were too large and sometimes they were too small, sometimes they were too far from the centre of the things and sometimes they were too close; sometimes they were too expensive and sometimes they wanted too many repairs; sometimes they were too stuffy and sometimes they were too airy; sometimes they were too dark and sometimes they were too bleak”. The climax occurs as Ruth loses her temper and refuses to see her bridegroom anymore and their final exchange of correspondence makes the denouement.
The language of the story is the neutral language of an educated person. The general tone of the story is ironic and humorous. The humorous effect is achieved with bookish language in description of a love affair. Ironic passages – it is said that Ruth was twice a widow, which makes the reader guess that Roger is the next victim, through the figurative simile («He went down like a row of ninepins», « as hard as nails») and epithet «defenseless» exposes the power of Ruths look, «instant flight», «the inevitable loom», «menacingly» show us
