created to create a triplex and to detect its creation via a shift in FRET efficacy. FRET among AuNP and NCD suppressed the fluorescence of CDs around 503 nm (excitation around 460 nm) when the triplex DNA was developing. Moreover, the existence of NFkB p50 was accompanied by a significant increase in fluorescence strength spurred on by the emergence of single-stranded DNA that had been labelled with AuNPs from the triplex DNA framework, which was then utilized to sensitively identify the transcription component. For the measurement of NF-kB p50, this method demonstrated stability (R2 ¼ 0.9943) in the region of 20e150 pM having a LOD of 9 pM. Additionally, the sequence-specific triplex-based biosensor was highly sensitive in its ability to separate NF-kB p50 from other proteins. According to their findings, the biosensor offers a broadly applicable substrate for the quick identification of NF-kB p50 in synthesized media, offering promise for the prompt identification and treatment of malignancy.
Utilizing CDs, Mohammadi et al. [32] revealed a method for building dual-emission fluorescence sensors and verified its use for amperometric miRNA-21 detection and cell imaging of tumour cells in a micro system. With an excitation frequency of 360 nm, the composition of yellow CDs (Y-CDs) and blue CDs (B-CDs) exhibits dual-emission behaviour with peaks at 409 and 543 nm. The durable and precise attachment of DNA probe designed and synthesized B-CDs to complimentary miRNA-21 targeted caused disruptions in the probing framework and changed the fluorescence intensities in both wavelengths as the quantity of miRNA-21 increased. As a result, the turn-on signal to turn-off signal proportion was significantly changed. As-prepared BY-CDs was constructed as an effective substrate for ratiometric fluorescent miRNA-21 detection, having a broad linear region of 0.15 fM to 2.46 pM and a LOD of 50 aM, by measuring the intrinsic ratiometric fluorescence variance (ΔF540 nm/ΔF410 nm). The suggested test was also used to identify miRNA-21 in diluted human serum specimens exhibiting acceptable rehabilitation and in MCF-7 cell lines having a LOD of 3 cells in 10 μL, suggesting the assay’spossibility for use in clinic treatment of the miRNA-associated disorder. More crucially, the photos demonstrated how MCF-7 cells that had been effectively labelled with BY-CDs might demonstrate th e viability of the suggested microfluidic apparatus as a cellcapturing tool for bioimaging.
Kalkal et al. [33] proposed the theory that in the instance of COVID-19, CDs produced from AS (AS-CDs) normalized immunological abnormalities and suppressed the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In the field of nanomedicine, CDs have historically been investigated as potential theranostic options for cell imaging and drug/ gene distribution. Numerous researches have proven that AS has anti-oxidant and antifibrotic attributes. Allicin, the primary effective component of AS, was discovered to have powerful anti-oxidant and reactive oxygen species reducing properties. It explored how antibiotic, anti-microbial, and anti-virus properties could counteract inflammatory impacts and cytokine storms. A new tool in the therapeutic arsenal for the treatment of COVID-19 disease was made possible by the manufacture of theranostic CDs using AS, which also served as a COVID-19 diagnostic reagent. On the basis of the reasoning provided, it was proposed that AS-CDs aid in protection by preventing the spread of

disease. The suggested theory might be used as a forward-looking strategy to pave the way for the creation of unique theranostic equipment which might be very effective in handling the continuing COVID-19 situation.
For the purpose of detecting miRNA-21 in MCF-7 cancerous cells, Mohammadi et al. [34] created CD-chitosan nanocomposite hydrogels by treating CDs made from different aldehyde precursors using chitosan. The Schiff base process, which forms imine bonds between the aldehyde groups on the surfaces of CDs and the amine in chitosan, was used to create three luminous hydrogels, which is more significant. Additionally, the hydrogel sheets, CDs, and CD-chitosan nanocomposite hydrogels were evaluated by SEM, TEM as well as UV–vis absorption. The DNA hydrogel bioassay method demonstrated excellent specificity and persistence for miRNA-21, with a LOD of 0.1–125 fM (0.03 fM). The biosensors for specimen assessment showed satisfactory predictability using MCF-7 malignancy cell counts of 1,000–25,000, 1,000–25,000, and 1,000–6,000

Additionally, minimal probe toxicity was shown by cell vitality results; hence nanocomposite hydrogels were used for multi-colour illumination of MCF-7 malignancy cells.
For the quick and ultr asensitive analys is of norovirus (NoV), Achadu et al. [35] combined revolutionary surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and dual-modality fluorescence (FL) methods into a unitary probe (NoV). The recently created sulphurdoped CDs produced from agar serve as dual-signal improvements for the established FL–SER-based biosensor (S-agCDs). The anti-NoV antibody-conjugated S-agCDs and magnetic silver nanocubes [poly(dop)-MNPs-Ag NCs] produced a core-satellite immunocomplex as a consequence of the antigen-antibody im munoreaction. NoV-like particles (NoV-LPs) were identified using an immunomagnetic enriching technique and the SERS modalities on a single-layer graphene platform over a broad spectrum of 1 fg mL to 10 ng mL having an acceptable LOD of 0.1 fg mL. FL conf ocal scanning was used to track “hotspots” before SERS detected clinical NoV in faecal samples reached 10 RNA

4.4.2 Metal ion sensing
While certain heavy metals including copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and tin (Sn) are necessary for life processes in trace levels, they are poisonous and hazardous to people in higher quantities. Therefore, it is crucial to identify these metal ions, and numerous investigators have used CDs’ fluorescence quenching phenomenon for this purpose [36]. For the cellular-level fluorescence turn-off sensing of Fe

The interaction involving the fluorophore moieties on the interface of N-CDs and the OH formed by the catalysed process among copper(II) and c ysteine permitted Chen et al. [37] to create a unique fluorescent biosensor for the quick monitoring of copper(II) (Cys). To be more precise, Cu(II) can catalyse the oxidation of Cys to generate cystine (Cys–Cys) and hydrogen peroxide (H

to generate hydroxyl radicals (OH) through a process similar to Fenton. The surface morphology of N-CDs might be oxidized and destroyed by OH, which causes the N-CDs’

Through a simple one-step hydrothermal production, Cai et al. [38] created fluorescent composite nanomaterials relying on an organic dye called 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU) as modulator and
D-arginine as carbon core, giving rise to CDs/4-MU hybrid
nanomaterials (CDs-4-MU). Such nanoparticles may enhance the specificity and sensitiv-

excellent biocompatibility and was capable of absorption by MC3T3 cells, making it use-

Liang et al. [39] created a unique, very effective ECL emits by doping CDs and AuNPs into a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8). Their research showed that ZIF-8 in the nanocomposites served as an ECL throttle to turn CDots into CDots•, which resulted in the increased ECL strength of CDots in K
solution in addition to serving

as a transporter for ECL markings. To further improve the ECL signals, AuNPs were established in the cavities of ZIF-8, which possess high conductivity. In comparison to the pure CDots, the nanocomposites ultimately displayed an ECL intensity that was about seven times higher. The nanocomposites were perfect for creating biosensors because the AuNPs in them offered a framework for efficiently adhering the biomolecule. The

By hydrothermally carbonizing the anaerobic bacterium Fusobacterium nuclea-

The generated Fn-CDs had great capabilities for cell monitoring and biomedical labelling and were simple to internalize into both plant and human cells. Upon entering cells, Fn-CDs can continue to glow for up to additional 24 h. Additionally, the fluorescent Fn-CDs showed tremen-

4.4.3 Detection of organic molecules
Besides the detection of metal ions, the fluorescence feature of CDs was well utilized for the sensing of other organic species. For the label-free sensing of vitamin B ogenous/endogenous peroxynitrite (ONOO) sensing, fluorescent pliable layer, and cell imaging fabrication, Meng et al. [41] created orange emitting luminous multi-functional CDs (O-CDs). Ethano l and safranine T were used as the precursors in a one-step hydrothermal method to create the O-CDs with excitation-independent properties. O-CDs’ fluorescence was quenched by using VB
as a quencher because of the IFE. The LOD was
12
determined to be 0.62 µM and the two-segment linear sensitivities were 1–65 µM and 70–140 µM. Additionally, ONOO, depending on static quenching, may diminish the fluorescence level of O-CDs (SQ). The LOD was 0.06 M, and the linearity limits are 0.3–9µM and 9–48 µM. Due to their excellent bioactivity, minimal cytotoxicity, and good photostability, O-CDs were also used as a cellular imaging agent for intracellular VB exogenous/endogenous ONOO imaging. These findings suggest that O-CDs possess the ability to be employed as a highly selective and quick fluorescent probe for the quick monitoring of VB
and exogenous/endogenous ONOO i n living cells. The
12
O-CDs as suggested could also be used to create a fluorescent elastic layer by combining them with PVA. The aforementioned information demonstrates that O-CDs have a bright future in a variety of fields, including biosensing, biological labelling, therapeutic optical imaging, and fluorescent coatings.
Wang et al. [42] used citric acid as the source of carbon and ethylenediamine as the nitrogen supply to hydrothermally create water-soluble fluorescent CDs. The recurrent and scaled-up synthetic studies aimed to investigate the viability of CD manufacturing

composite solution and established a combination with potassium ferricyanide. The outcomes demonstrate that the introduction of ascorbic acid changed the system’s trivalent iron into bivalent iron

composite solution’s fluorescence.
For the “turn-on” assessment of pH and tetracycline antibiotics (TCs), such as oxytetracycline (OTC), TC, and chlortetracycline (CTC), Li et al. [43] created red-fluorescent CDs (R-CDs). Utilizing neutral red and thiourea as precursors, the CDs were synthesized utilizing a one-pot hydrothermal process. As-obtained CDs have minimal toxicity, excellent light absorption and bio-compatibility, and outstanding photobleaching resilience.

Significantly, following the insertion of TCs relying on the agglomeration-induced emission enhancement process, the CDs showed a considerable emission improvement. The LOD for TC, OTC, and CTC is 12, 23, and 25 nM, correspondingly, and the linear regression recognition limits were 3–35 M, 2–50 µM, and 5–50 µM, respectively. Utilizing a commercially available optical fibre spectrometer (OFS) and a customized colour sensor device, Choudhary et al. Phthalic acid (a carbon source) and triethylenediamine were used to create the CQDs (passive). The CQDs were discovered to have a quantum output of around 18.9% and to be selective in the pH region of 3–10. In terms of mea n percentage yield, the reliability of

41.2 nM, the bioprobe revealed a considerable fluorescence quenching for dopamine in the linear region of 0–30 M. Leveraging ethyl cellulose and a straightforward dipcoating technique, a bioprobe was mounted on a tapered optical fibre and tested for use in multi-colour imaging techniques. In the dopamine range of concentrations of 0–10 M, the resultant tapered optical fibre reached a good LOD of 46.4 nM. The bioprobe showed outstanding multi-colour imaging capability, excellent biocompatibility, lengthy light absorption, and heat resistance. It also had adequate cytotoxicity against human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y). Human serum and cerebrospinal fluid were used to test the bioprobe’s viability.
4.4.4 Pesticides
Pesticides have been used extensively to preserve agricultural crops against pests, weeds, and diseases for a long time, encompassing the earlier mineral kinds and the modern chemically manufactured varieties. Pesticide usage increased globally by 69.7% between 1990 and 2018, and it is even more than twice in large agricultural generating regions like Asia and North America. It has been a worldwide issue that the massive residue left behind from long-term misuse, overuse, and mismanagement of pesticides will seriously endanger the environment and population health. If a pesticide is not reduced over the period, it will persist in the vegetation, sediment, and groundwater. It will then be reallocated geographically via circulating water and develop over time. Consuming foodstuffs and related goods over the long term that have high pesticide residue levels will r esult in metabolic diseases, immune response issues, a nd other ailments. Including a significant number of deaths each year, the health threat for professional groups subjected to elevated pesticide concentration is probably certain. The build-up of pesticides has sped up some extinction of species and decreased the effectiveness of natural remedies. Then, numerous nations and worldwide organizations around the globe have implemented a number of metrics to enhance the influence of pesticides. These include, but are not restricted to, outlawing and expelling high-toxic pesticides from the industry promptly, limiting the utilization of high-risk pesticides and progressively substituting other low-toxic agrochemicals, establishing the highest residue concentrations, establishing innovative environmentally friendly and generally safe bioactive pesticides, and more. The reliable and sensitive detection of pesticide residues in various matrices is necessary for the execution of these procedures. In this respect, optical sensing technology has recently drawn a lot of interest in detecting trace
