11.6 MEDICINAL IMPORTANCE OF TULSI (Ocimum tenuiflorum)
Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) belongs to the family Lamiaceae,
and also known as Holy Basil. It consists of about 30–160
species which are distributed widely in the tropical regions of
Asia, Central to South America and Africa. The texture of
plant can vary with habitat and in India, we found three
categories of Basil (Tulsi) Lakshmi tulsi (green coloured) and
Krishna Tulsi (purple coloured).
This tropical plant grows as a weed and is cultivated widely
whereas it is used in the culinary arts, Ayurvedic medicines,
food industry as a digestive stimulant, as an aroma to improve
the smell, taste and digestibility of food, multidrug ability, etc.
The presence of essential oils and volatile oil provides specific aromatic odour to Ocimum
which is mostly present in the leaf. The aromatic volatile oil such as phenols, aldehydes
and terpenes are present in Ocimum. It also contains glycosides, tannins, alkaloids and
saponines. The essential oil from the leaves of Ocimum sanctum has been found to possess

Biologically active oldest cultivated vegetables garlic (Allium
sativum) belongs to the Alliaceae family. More than 700 species
are known of this genus. It is used as one of the most
therapeutic and medicinally important vegetable cultivated
around the world. It has also been used widely as a spice,
ornamental and as a medicine for curing numerous diseases.
A specific characteristic flavour of the garlic is basically
due to numerous nonvolatile S-containing amino acids
(thiosulfinates). The most prominent garlic flavour agent is S-allyl-cysteine sulfoxide
(alliin or ACSO). Presence of S-containing agent makes garlic a special class of medicinally
important herb which maintains many biological functions and also improves the

276 Pharmaceutical Chemistry
biosynthesis of glutathione. The main chemical constituents of garlic are amino acids (viz.,
glutaminic acid, leucine, aspartic acid, lysine, arginine, and valine), minerals (viz., Mn, K,
Ca, P and in minor quantities Mg, Se, Na, Fe, Zn and Cu), vitamins (viz., vitamin B6,
vitamin C and in minor amount folic acid, niacin and pantothenic acid), essential oil with
numerous S-containing components (viz., allyl-disulfide and allyl-trisulfide), Alliin
(enzyme alliinase converted into allicin), ajoene (produced by allicin condensation), sugars
(glucose and fructose), quercetin, etc.
Ajoene is known for its anti-microbial, anti-thrombosis and cholesterol lowering
activities which is now confirmed by in vitro as well as clinical trial studies. Recently, it has
been reported that clinically ajoene has significant results in patients having skin basal cell
carcinoma response and inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis of several human
leukaemia CD34 negative cells including HL-60, HEL, OCIM-1, and U937.
All components from Ocimum species possess predominant biological activity, viz.,
antioxidant and antimicrobial, anticancer, antidiabetic, bactericidal, repellent, antiulcer,
hepatoprotective, anticonvulsant, chemopreventive and radioprotective, analgesic,
antifertility, anti-inflammatory, and antihypertensive action effects. It is also used in various
other diseases such as bronchial asthma, malaria, diarrhoea, dysentery, chronic fever, insect
bite and skin diseases. Medicinal uses of garlic are listed below (Figs. 11.12) Bioactive
compounds extracted from garlic are given in Fig. 11.13.
1. Garlic acts as a very good antiaging and antioxidant agent. It shows antioxidants
activity by skin-free radical scavenger and thus keeps it glowing and youthful. It
also contains sulphur and polyphenols that help to produce collagen and enhances
blood flow thus, finally helps in fighting wrinkles that leads to natural skin glow.
2. It also acts as anti-inflammatory and prevents various infections.
3. Garlic is a rich source of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) and boosts the immune function.
4. It can also be used against food poisoning and thus it must be present in the food.
5. It inhibits the platelet aggregation and enhances the fibrinolysis.
6. It can be used as a lipid lowering agent by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase or other
enzymes.
7. It acts as antibacterial agent, thus preventing any kind of cuticle infection.
8. It has vasorelaxant properties.
9. It also shows strong antifungal characteristics, thus can be used in various skin
infections, athlete’s foot infection and many other infections.
10. Garlic and its derived compound ajoene have demonstrated inhibition of platelet
aggregation in vitro and in animals, and reduction of platelet-dependent thrombus
formation.
11. Garlic derivative, allicin has good antiviral and antibacterial properties which help
to kill the germs that cause ear infection and subsequent pain. It also brings down
the inflammation caused by such infections (viz., urinary inflammation like cystitis,
nephritis, etc).
12. It is also used to treat gonorrhoea diseases.

Medicinal importance of Curcumin, Neem, Vitamin C, Ranitidine, Ginger, Tulsi, Garlic and Ajwain 277
13. It exhibits antibacterial properties, thus used to treat numerous respiratory problems
(viz., bronchitis, cough, influenza, swine flu, pharingitis, otitis, sinusitis, wheezing,
earache, etc.), and many digestive tract diseases (viz., diarrhoea and intestine
putrefactions).
14. Due to antibacterial and analgesic properties, crushed garlic clove is used directly
to teeth leading to relief in pain.
15. Garlic oil is also used to treat ear infection. 2-3 drops of this oil can be used directly
whenever necessary (mixture of one tablespoon of minced garlic clove and hot
coconut or olive oil).
16. Garlic component, allicin has the ability to lower the risk of hypertension or high
blood pressure. It is also helpful in diabetes by increasing the secretion of insulin
and controls the blood sugar levels. Garlic extract and garlic powder are more
effective in lowering cholesterol levels than raw garlic cloves while fresh garlic oil
is capable of total serum cholesterol, LDLs and triglycerides level in the body. But
it has no effect on HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol.
17. The regular consumption of garlic is the best remedy for treating all types of cancers
(viz., bladder, prostate, breast, stomach, and colon cancer). Allyl-sulfides in garlic
are known for its anti-cancerous activity.
