Мисс Марта была приятная женщина. Ей было сорок лет. У нее был маленький магазин, 2 000 $ в банке и сентиментальное сердце. Еще у нее была
очень большая проблема: она не была замужем и очень хотела найти мужа.
2–3 раза в неделю в ее магазин приходил один покупатель. Ему было лет 45, у
него были приятные манеры и сильный немецкий акцент. Он всегда покупал
две черствые булочки. Свежая булочка стоила 5 центов. Черствая булочка
стоила 2,5 цента. Он покупал только две черствые булочки и ничего больше.
Один раз мисс Марта увидела на его руке краску. Она подумала, что он художник, он очень бедный, у него совсем нет денег, и поэтому он ест только
черствые булочки и пьет только воду.
Утром, когда мисс Марта завтракала, она всегда грустно думала, что бедный художник сейчас ест черствые булочки. Она так хотела, чтобы он мог есть
вместе с ней ее вкусный завтрак! Как я уже сказал, у нее было сентиментальное сердце.
Мисс Марта купила новое платье и работала в магазине только в нем. Она
приготовила специальный суперкрем, чтобы лицо было белое, и каждый вечер
клала этот крем на лицо. И думала, думала, думала … .
Однажды покупатель, как всегда, пришел в магазин, дал мисс Марте пять
центов и сказал: «Две черствые булочки, пожалуйста». В это время и он, и
мисс Марта услышали на улице шум, сирену и увидели, как по улице едет пожарная машина. Покупатель, как любой нормальный человек, вышел из магазина, чтобы посмотреть, что случилось. И тогда мисс Марта поняла, что она
должна делать: она надрезала булочки и положила в них масло. Потом она положила булочки в пакет. Покупатель вернулся в магазин, взял пакет, сказал:
«Спасибо», и ушел.
Когда он ушел, мисс Марта начала думать: правильно или не правильно
она сделала. Может быть, он подумает, что женщина не должна делать первый
шаг? А, может быть, должна?
Весь день она могла думать только об этом. Она думала: что будет?
После обеда она увидела, что в магазин входят два человека. Один был ее
художник, второй – молодой человек. Мисс Марта видела его первый раз.
Художник был весь красный, он с ненавистью смотрел на мисс Марту и
громко повторял:

– Dummkopf!
Молодой человек сказал:
– Не надо, пойдем домой!
Но художник сказал:
– Я не хочу уходить домой! Я хочу ей все сказать! Вы наглая старая кошка!
Мисс Марта была в ужасе. Она смотрела на него и ничего не понимала.
– Пойдем, ты уже все сказал! Достаточно! – Сказал молодой человек.
Он взял художника за плечо, и они вышли из магазина. Через минуту молодой человек вернулся в магазин один. Он сказал мисс Марте:
– Извините его, он очень расстроен. Вы, как мне кажется, не понимаете, что
случилось. Дело в том, что этот человек – архитектор, мой коллега. Он три месяца готовил проект здания новой мэрии. Он готовил этот проект для конкурса. Вы, наверное, знаете, а, может быть не знаете, что сначала проекты делают
в карандаше, а потом нужно убрать карандаш. И лучше всего убирает карандаш черствый хлеб. Поэтому он регулярно покупал у вас черствые булочки.
Вчера вечером проект был почти готов, нужно было только чуть-чуть убрать
карандаш, а сегодня, ваше маcло … . Вы понимаете … . Извините … .
И молодой человек ушел. Мисс Марта пошла в спальню, сняла новое платье и надела старое. Потом она взяла суперкрем и положила его в пакет для
мусора.
