For those situated on the spectrum of Neurodivergence, it is
imperative to recognize the hardships that may arise from
thinking differently than the neurotypical majority. Nonetheless,
it is paramount to keep in mind that your distinctive
idiosyncrasies impart upon you a singularly exceptional and
valuable perspective, one that can offer the world an
incomparable contribution.
To my beloved husband, Omar, and my dear son, Mohammad, I
hold you in the highest esteem as my guiding light, my Polaris
amidst life’s vast and unpredictable terrain.
My esteemed accolades are extended to the distinguished Dr
Collin Brathwaite, Dr Amber Guth, Dr Leon Pachter, Dr
Michael Khalife, and Dr Laurence Spier, in sincere gratitude
for your awe-inspiring tutelage, unwavering faith in my
abilities, and the invaluable lessons you have imparted to me.
Lastly, my heartfelt acknowledgments are directed towards my
family with special reverence to Architect Ghalia Ajouz, as well
as my esteemed brother Dr Randi Harris for their unwavering
encouragement and support.
Hana Ajouz
This book is dedicated to my mother Clara E Brathwaite, a
long retired elementary school principal who instilled in me the
value of continually learning and to my wife Barbara, my
partner on this incredible journey.
Collin E.M. Brathwaite

I dedicate this book to my family and all of team members. We
are humbled and honored to have had the opportunity to treat
and serve over 19,000 patients in the operating room and over
40,000in our clinic. Their care, course, and outcomes have
forged the bedrock of knowledge upon which this book is built.
Robert J.Cerfolio
This book is dedicated to all those residents seeking surgical
information in order to better serve those under their care. An
additional dedication is to my parents who never had the
benet of a formal education but instilled in me the quest for
constantly pursuing knowledge.
Hersch Leon Pachter

Preface
It is my esteemed honor and pleasure to serve as an editor for this book. It
allowed me to be part of the cycle of pedagogy that exists in surgical education. On the one hand I had the opportunity to work closely with Dr Hana
Ajouz, a former resident of mine. In the 35years that I have been training
residents, I have not encountered a more passionate learner. This book was
her brainchild. On the other hand, this project also afforded me the privilege
of collaborating with two preeminent surgeons and accomplished faculty,
known for their methodical approach to the practice of surgery and their dedication to excellence, my colleagues, Drs Robert Cerfolio and Leon Pachter.
The purpose of creating this book was to provide a concise repository of
information that will prepare the surgical resident for the American Board of
Surgery In-training Examination (ABSITE). Often in various disciplines in
medicine, in our pursuit of knowledge, though the questions remain the same,
over time the answers may change. The book is designed to be a blueprint for
success, with the most up to date information. The chapters purposefully provide an abundance of diagrams, charts, and tables to assist the reader in easily
committing these to memory. The nal product is the result of the hard work
of many of our residents and faculty. It is my belief that The ABSITE
Blueprints will be helpful to surgical trainees as they prepare not only for the
in-training exam, but for their future clinical practice.
