The patient has to look straight into the camera.
The whole face, including the hair, ears, and chin, must
be depicted.
Both auricles should be equally visible.
The line through the inferior margin of both orbits must
be horizontal.
If these requirements are not met, the position of the nasal
pyramid in the face will be incorrectly documented.

The head is deflected backward so that the nasal tip is
projected just between the eyebrows. This is of extreme
importance. If this requirement is not met, the
preoperative and postoperative projection of the lobule
cannot be compared.
The upper lip is depicted completely, whereas the chin
and ears are not. For this reason, the base view is
usually printed twice as large as the other photographs.
Side View, Left and Right (▶ Fig. 2.137 and ▶ Fig.
2.138)

The subject is positioned at 90° to the camera by
turning the stool. The head is upright. The hair and
chin have to be depicted.
The line drawn from the lower orbital rim to the tragus
must be horizontal.
The nearest eyebrow should be completely visible,
whereas the contralateral eyebrow must be invisible.
The nasal tip is depicted free from the frame at about
one-third of the horizontal dimension. The posterior
half of the head is thus not shown.
Oblique Side View, Right and Left (▶ Fig. 2.139 and ▶
Fig. 2.140)
The body and head are in the same position as for the
side view, except that the head is turned 135° instead
of 90°.
