melanonychia using Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, which had no
proper treatment method in dermatology textbooks and had to
say only harsh words like “I have to do a biopsy to know!”
has given me great hope and reward. Q-switched Nd:YAG
laser shows the effect of the pigment band disappearing
immediately in front of the eyes in the case of melanonychia
caused by the activation of benign functionally occurring
melanocytes, which greatly helps in treatment and differential
diagnosis (other cases do not respond to the laser). In responsive cases, follow-up observation and additional laser procedures are repeated about 5–10 times periodically, and such
low-uence Q-switched Nd:YAG laser for the treatment of
melanonychia is very safe and effective. Fortunately, Mr. J
responded immediately to the laser and decided to follow-up
after a week (Figs.100.18–100.20, 100.21–100.24, 100.25,
100.26 and 100.27–100.29).
