Summary
The protocol for cleft palate speech assessment presented in this
chapter addresses the ingredients and procedures for obtaining an
adequate speech sample, analyzing the sample, correlating
physical/orofacial findings with the speech data, and interpreting that
data to make the speech diagnosis and treatment plan. We have
emphasized the utility of controlled speech sampling contexts in
capturing specific and characteristic cleft-related speech errors, and
have included a series of systematic questions for use in differential
speech diagnosis. Sample case histories across a developmental age
span illustrate various diagnostic outcomes and treatment
recommendations. Issues related to early speech intervention with
babies and toddlers are discussed in Chapter 11. Speech therapy for
cleft-related speech errors in preschool and school-aged youngsters is
addressed in Chapter 12.

Zoo Passage
Look at this book with us. It's a story about a zoo. That is where bears
go. Today it's very cold out of doors, but we see a cloud overhead that's
a prey white fluffy shape. We hear that straw covers the floor of cages
to keep the chill away; yet a deer walks through the trees with her head
high. They feed seeds to birds so they're able to fly.
