Foreword
It is with great pleasure that I write the Foreword for the third edition
of the Michigan Manual of Plastic Surgery. The Michigan Manual of
Plastic Surgery has become the go-to reference guide for medical
students, physician assistants, nurses, residents, and medical
practitioners from around the world, as they provide care for their
patients. It highlights all of the critical aspects of plastic surgery in a
compact, information rich, visually pleasing, and yet surprisingly
comprehensive book. It provides each physician and surgeon exactly
what they need to know in sufficient depth and breadth to be highly
valuable throughout the entire duration of a patient’s care from their
initial outpatient evaluation through the successful completion of their
care. In addition, the Michigan Manual of Plastic Surgery has been
written entirely by residents and fellows in plastic surgery and related
specialties. As such, the Michigan Manual of Plastic Surgery has a
focus, structure, and approach, which is perfectly suited to the
people who need to access this information the most. It doesn’t
require reading exhaustively detailed chapters to glean the critical
information they need on each topic. Instead, the nicely crafted
Michigan Manual of Plastic Surgery has a visually pleasing
presentation style with readily accessible information, which is
designed to provide “on-time” learning, whether it is the night before
an operation, during an outpatient clinic visit, on the hospital wards,
or between cases in the operating room. The first two editions of the
Michigan Manual of Plastic Surgery have been highly successful and
have helped countless health care providers and learners. I am very
excited about the enhancements and additions made by Drs. David
Brown, Widya Adidharma, and Geoffrey Hespe to make the third
edition even more valuable. The editors have significantly improved
and updated the content of the book, revamped the layout to
enhance readability, created new chapters on hot topics in plastic
surgery (ie, lymphedema surgery, gender affirmation surgery, and

neuroma surgery), and added beautiful illustrations and figures to
enhance the visual learning experience. The third edition will also be
available electronically for ease of accessibility to the content of the
book. If you prefer a copy of the book in your hands, the third edition
of the Michigan Manual of Plastic Surgery will still fit in your white
coat so the information is no further than a pocket away. I am excited
about the release of the third edition of the Michigan Manual of
Plastic Surgery, the most comprehensive, portable plastic surgery
textbook available. I am sure you will find it an incredibly valuable
resource to provide “just-in-time” information as you care for your
patients.

Preface
We are excited to present the third edition of the Michigan Manual of
Plastic Surgery, the world’s only pocket-sized, yet comprehensive
treatise on this vast subject.
As in the first edition, we sought to present the entire scope of
contemporary plastic surgery in an easily accessible format. We
have produced this handbook primarily for medical students and
surgical residents to facilitate clinical consultations and pre-, intra-,
and postoperative care. The content and format are also an excellent
reference for practitioners in the multitude of other fields with which
plastic surgery interacts, who need ready access to basic, practical
information. Additionally, we trust that the Michigan Manual will
provide a succinct review for the in-service and written board
examinations. To aid in review for such examinations, we have
placed an * in front of material that is commonly tested. Additionally,
we have included questions that are commonly asked in the
operating room at the end of each chapter to prepare for each case.
We have also included key references for additional reading on each
topic.
This book was written and edited by residents at the University of
Michigan. We wish to thank our section editors, Megan Lane, Rami
D. Sherif, Sherry Tang, Christine S. Wang, and Chien-Wei Wang, for
their contributions.
We hope that you find this handbook helpful in your quest for
improving your knowledge base of plastic surgery. We are delighted
to contribute to the education of those dedicated to caring for plastic
