Into the still river

It was nearly impossible to work. After delivering a car to a customer on a hot Monday afternoon last July, auto salesman Ednei Lima sat at his desk in the cavernous showroom of Action Motors in Danbury, Connecticut. Looking outside, he was transfixed by the violent storm that had suddenly struck the city. Torrents of rain were gushing down with stunning speed — three inches in less than an

7

hour — pounding the flat roof of the dealership and swamping the huge glass walls in watery sheets.

Thirty-four-year-old Lima had worked for Action Motors since moving to the United States from Brazil nine years before. Unable to speak a word of English when he arrived, he was now one of the company's top salespeople. That evening, Lima had been scheduled to man the lot until 8:00. With work abruptly terminated for the day, he called his girlfriend to come pick him up. Normally, he would ride his silver Kawasaki motorcycle back to their condo a few miles away, but the storm had not subsided and the roads had become treacherous.

On their way home, Lima and his girlfriend, Adriana Pelegrini, saw a man through their rain-spattered windshield. He was walking near the center of the Casper Street bridge. To the couple's horror, the man climbed up onto one of the cement barriers and, right before their eyes, jumped off, plunging into the swirling waters of the Still River some 20 feet below. Skidding to a stop, Lima called 911. Then he leaped out of the car and rushed to the bridge. Looking into the raging waters, Lima could see the young man's head bobbing up and down and his backpack floating nearby. He looked unconscious. Still dressed in business clothes, Lima plunged into the river, smashing both his knees on the rocks.

The kid, however, did not want to get out. Earlier that afternoon, 19-year-old Andrew Higgenbottom had walked into his mother's bedroom in the house where he had grown up on nearby Spring Street and told her that he was going to kill himself. She had not believed him, even though he had tried to do just that a month before with an overdose of pills. According to his mother, Higgenbottom, the youngest of her three children, had been discharged from the Army in January because of a heart condition. He tried to re-enlist but had been turned down. «Andrew told me he didn't want to live if he couldn't be in the Army», his mother says. «But I never thought he'd do what he did».

As HMTs carried Higgenbottom to an ambulance, Lima followed. Taking a closer look at the soaking wet man standing near the stretcher, one of the policemen exclaimed, «You again?» The officer recognized Lima from the scene of another harrowing rescue just four months earlier. Driving home from work one Saturday, Lima

8

and his older brother Washington passed a burning house on Triangle Street in Danbury. The brothers grabbed a huge metal ladder from a neighboring painting business, and while Washington held the bottom steady, Ednei helped the terrified residents, one by one, down the ladder to safety.

Fear of flying

I love to travel but I hate to fly. I do not want to be in an airplane flying thousands of meters above the ground. 42.___ At any one moment there are 300,000 airplanes in the sky around the world. And in each of those planes it is estimated that 50 % of passengers will be scared.

43.___ Statistics show that flying is safer than driving a car, but this fact does not help those people who sit on an airplane waiting for it to crash.

However, there are ways of overcoming a fear of flying. Several aviation companies offer special courses for those people who need help to fly. 44.___ During the courses trained pilots stress that turbulence cannot make a plane crash. They explain that planes cannot be damaged by lightning strikes. They also talk about any changes in engine noises.

Even if you do not wish to attend a course here are some ways of helping you reduce your anxiety so that you can enjoy your flight more and arrive in good shape:

Keep busy. Take something to do on the plane. Boredom increases your fear. If you have something to occupy yourself, time will pass quickly. 45.___

Relax. Before and during take-off try taking deep breaths and imagine that you are breathing from your feet and then up around the rest of your body.

Drink water. It is important that you do not get dehydrated. Remember your body needs more fluids in high altitudes. Do not drink alcohol.

Check your route. Often the airline magazine will contain a map showing the route to your destination and you can check your progress during the flight.

Ask questions. Tell your steward or stewardess that you do not like flying. They should be sympathetic. Listen to announcements. 46.___ This should be reassuring.

A.Most people say they do not like flying because they are not in control.

B.Try renewing your address book or writing postcards to friends.
