tickets, the hungry and thirsty ones hurrying to the refreshment rooms before the train starts.

Peter

For me there is no travel so fine as by boat. I love to feel the deck of the boat under my feet, to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing in my face and hear the cry of the sea-gulls. And what excitement, too, there is in coming into the harbour and seeing round us all the ships, steamers, cargo-ships, sailing ships, rowing boats.

Herbert

I prefer travelling by car, because it gives the freedom of movement. You can stop whenever you want and wherever you want just to admire the beauty of nature. Travelling by car opens plenty of opportunities from the comfort of your seat. It is fast and comfortable. You don’t have to wait for the right time, as you do with public transport. You have enough privacy and you don’t have to share space with strangers. You can listen to your favourite music or radio channel. You can park wherever you need, which is impossible when travelling by train or plane. I hope to buy my own car when I’m older.

Dialogue “We buy tickets”

-I want a one-way ticket to Springfield. When does the next train leave?

-There is a train at four-ten. There is also another at seven-twenty this evening.

-Are they both through trains?

-Yes. The four-ten is a fast train and makes only one stop in New Haven. It arrives in Springfield at nine-thirty. The second is a local train and takes about an hour and a half longer.

-Is there a dining car on both trains?

-There’s a diner on the four-ten. The seven-twenty has just a café. You can get there sandwiches and coffee, drinks, etc.

-What is the price of a ticket?

-A seat on the four-ten will cost you ten pounds. A ticket for the seventwenty is cheaper: it will cost you only six pounds.

-I think I’ll have a ticket for the four-ten. It will be more expensive but

I’ll save time.

-As you like. Here is your ticket.

46

- Thank you.

The British Climate

The British Isles which are surrounded by the ocean have an insular

climate. There are three things that chiefly determine the climate of the

United Kingdom: the position of the islands in the temperate belt; the fact

that the prevailing winds blow from the west and south-west and the warm

current — the Gulf Stream that flows from the Gulf of Mexico along the

western shores of England. All these features make the climate more

moderate, without striking difference between seasons. It is not very cold

in winter and never very hot in summer.

So, the British ports are ice-free and its rivers are not frozen

throughout the year. The weather on the British Isles has a bad reputation.
