Student’s Book

Lesson 1

I. Translate into Russian.

Reading is my favourite pastime.

I can’t remember seeing the actor once.

II.Tense and Voice Distinctions.

SP 1. She denies telling lies. having told lies.

I can’t explain, but having done it just once is enough.

A man who went travelling to Africa was asked if he liked tigers hunting. “Well,” smiled the man. “Of course I liked hunting tigers but not tigers hunting me”.

Translate (in writing) – Боб настаивает на том, чтобы мы его послали учиться в Лондон.

нас послали учиться в Лондон. его послали учиться в Лондон. послать кого-нибудь в Лондон.

But: Receiving a letter from you yesterday was really nice. (smth that actually happened.) SP 4. On seeing a snake the boy froze. (= at once)

After returning from India he wrote a book. (= a gap of time)

In choosing a present I examined lots of books. (=simultaneously) SP 5. He shocked me by telling a lie. (Why?)

SP 6. The child shows that he is hungry by crying. (How?)

SP 7. You can’t drive without knowing traffic rules. (= if you don’t…)

He couldn’t pass a mirror without looking at himself. (he passed…and looked)

SP 8. In spite of wearing glasses she sees badly. Despite wearing …..

V.Verbs and Direct Gerund

Exercise 1. Classify the verbs below into the correct columns.

Promise, expect, plan, risk, refuse, can’t stand, avoid, not mind, offer, suggest, need, enjoy, consider, decide, afford, want, fail.

Exercise 2. Tick the possible answers. There may be more than one correct answer.

Exercise 3. Use 6 of the verbs below to describe some of the things that happened to you once.

Example: Yesterday, I just avoided having an accident on my bicycle.

Avoid, afford, manage, admit, promise, consider, learn, plan, practise, decide, put off, fail, risk, suggest, agree, offer, give up, refuse, deny.

Exercise 4. Study the 2 lists of common verbs. The ones in the first list always take the infinitive and those in the 2nd always take the gerund. Use one of these verbs in the correct form to complete each of the following sentences.

Infinitive: manage, pretend, offer, promise, hope. Gerund: need, consider, deny, fancy, avoid, risk, admit.

1)She finally … to escape by stealing a key.

2)He … to carry the old man’s suitcase.

3)He’ll never … chewing gum in class.

4)… her getting married at fourteen!

5)She realized that she … breaking a leg if she jumped from the window, but she knew there was no other choice.

C)In the gaps in the letter use the Infinitive or the Gerund. Write a short letter in analogy.

To begin with I don’t like (cook). And I hate (wash) up. I can’t (drive) but I’m planning (learn) one day! I gave up (smoke) 10 years ago. You don’t (smoke), do you? What else can I (tell) you?
