FOLKLORE OF SYUNIK
Summary
The “Folklore of Syunik “ presents opulent printed and manuscript folklore heritage of the Syunik region. The work has been implemented with the funding support of the State Committee of Science of the Ministry of Education, Science,Sport and Culture of the Republic of Armenia within the framework of the research project 18T6F194.
Folklore recorded from the province of Syunik (Zangezur ethnographic region) is multi-genre and diverse: folktales, legends, talks, proverbs, curses, blessings, riddles, horovels, lullabies, labour, wedding and mourning songs, games, rhymes and memoirs, told by storytellers Hovhannes Mkrtchyan-Zakaryan, Anush Lalayan, Varsenik Manukyan, Gurgen Ordyan, Gusan Ashot, Ashugh Atan and others.
Recordings of Syunik Folklore collected by well-known folklorist-collectors Sero Khanzadyan, Mikael Arakelyan, Mushegh Gevorgyan, Zareh Ter-Minasyan, Mikael Avchyan are kept in processed and unprocessed funds of archives of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography (FFII, FFIV, FFV, FFVII, FFVIII, FFXI, FFXII), hence a considerable part of these materials has been included in the collection. The collection also contains materials from 1967 field-trip compiled by researchers of the Zangezur Folklore Group of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography NAS, which are kept in the FFVII archive fund of the Institute. Zangezour Folklore Group was led by the folklorist Artashes Nazinyan, the members of the group project were Sargis Harutyunyan, Zhenya Khachatryan, and Venera Sahakyan. The work is also supplemented with folklore materials published in various collections of different genres and in old magazines.
In 2019, our theme group (led by Tamar Hayrapetyan, members: Gohar Melikyan, Siranush Arakelyan, Alina Kirakosyan) recorded the current state of folklore in the province of Syunik (Goris, Sisian, Kapan and Meghri regions). The group focused on the changes (transformations) of the oral culture over time enabling further researchers to carry studies on the collected data, and to analyze time and space variations which are natural for folk narratives.
The collection entitled “Syunik Folklore” is a complete and systematic work presenting various genres and motive parallels of texts of folk tradition and is of great historical and educational value due to original ethno-cultural solutions and cognitive interpretations.
The collection “Folklore of Syunik” comprises the following sections:
1.Epic folklore
2.Lyrical folklore
3.Formula-paremiological folklore
