COMPOSITE MATERIALS

1.Among the oldest and newest of structural materials are composite materials. It was discovered many years ago that two or more materials could be used together as one. Later it was proved that such a combination often behaved better than each material alone. Following this principal, clay and straw were combined to make bricks. For centuries composite materials remained virtually untapped. Only then monolithic materials, such as iron, copper were served for needs of an advancing technology. Recently it was a development of technology with coming of reinforced concrete, linoleum, plasterboard and plywood panels.

2.During the 1930s and 1940s light-weight honeycomb structures, machine parts made from compressed metal powders and plastic reinforced with glass fibers became commercial realities. These developments marked the beginning of the modern era of composite engineering materials. It was mentioned growing and using composite materials. Nevertheless, the emergence of a strict discipline and technology of composite materials is barely 20 years old.

3.There are two major reasons for the current interest in composite materials. The first is the demand for materials that will outperform the traditional monolithic materials. The second and more important in the long run, is that composites offer engineers the opportunity to design totally new materials, with the precise combination of properties needed for a specific task. Although new composites are usually more costly than conventional materials, they can be used more sparingly, because of their superior qualities.

7.Choose the right statement.

a)Composite materials are among the newest of structural materials.

b)Composite materials cannot be used sparingly.

c)The combination of materials works better than each of them alone.

d)Light-weight honeycomb structures were invented in the 21st century.

a)the interest in composite materials is constantly growing.

82

b)the usage of composite materials is commercially successful.

c)they use composite materials in advanced technologies.

9. Answer the question.

What are characteristics of composite materials?

a)They are economy in use, superior qualities and combination of necessary properties.

b)They are high cost, lower qualities and combination of necessary properties.

c)They are economy in use, superior qualities and combination of rare properties.

d)They are economy in use, lower qualities and combination of needed properties.

10.Find the main idea of the text.

a)Composites are in demand in many spheres of industry due to their superior qualities which outperform traditional monolithic materials.

b)In spite of their cost composite materials can be used more sparingly because of their advanced characteristics.

c)Composite materials such as bricks can be considered among the oldest and newest structural materials.

d)The development of light-weight honeycomb structures was the beginning of the modern era of composite engineering materials.

HURRICANE PREPARATION TIPS FOR CONSTRUCTION SITES

1.Local emergency operations officials and the national Weather Service will provide hurricane landfall probabilities. Approximately 60 to 48 hours before the hurricane is expected to make landfall, consider cancelling the delivery of building materials to all job sites except any materials needed to secure the building site from storm damage. While contractors generally don’t want to stop or delay construction activities, the 48to 24-hour window before landfall is the suggested time to stop all construction activity. It’s important to note that most local building departments generally stop field inspections, except for those related to pouring columns, tie beams, wet decks, floors and similar structural items, during this time as well. Contractors are encouraged to activate their hurricane job site plan during this window of time.

2.They notify subcontractors to help secure the building site. Helpful hints for site protection include: secure all job sites, giving priority attention to those located in the most populated areas; clean up all construction debris; tie or band together all loose plywood and lumber; secure other loose building supplies; remove permit board and all job site signage; locate and turn off electricity, water and gas.

3.Also, secure all portable toilets. Portable toilets can also be anchored adjacent to L-shaped walls of the home under construction and they can be weighed down with concrete blocks or sand. After the site is secure, advise subcontractors to leave and not return until the hurricane threat has passed. Make sure to have contact numbers for all subcontractors stored in a secure and dry place and that they know who will contact them after the hurricane passes.

7.Choose the right statement.

a)Construction activities rarely stop because of hurricane warning as all construction sites are safe enough.

b)The window before a hurricane fall depends on accuracy of weather forecast and the scale of construction sites.

c)Contractors usually unwillingly stop construction activities but they should do so in two or one day note.

d)Contractors usually stop all construction activities right before the hurricane because they do not waste time.

89

8. Complete the sentence.

Contractors are strongly recommended to activate their hurricane security plan …

a)during the landfall window time.

b)when the hurricane is about to landfall.

c)if it is possible to do at the certain site.

d)if the construction site is not secure.

9. Answer the question.

What are the two ways to secure portable toilets?

a)Contractors turn off gas and water and after that remove the toilets or warn people about possible danger.

b)Portable toilets can be attached to walls of buildings being constructed or they can be made heavier using building materials from the construction site.

c)Portable toilets are removed from the construction site or they are secured when contractors cover the toilets with tents.

d)Contractors usually clean the portable toilets or hire special companies to remove them from populated areas.

10.Find the main idea of the text.

a)Contractors should warn subcontractors about the hurricane warning and contact them after the hurricane passes.

b)At the hurricane threat the most important measure is to secure all loosen parts of the building at the site.

c)Hurricane preparation measures take a lot of efforts from contractors’ side during 1-2 day window time.

d)As soon as hurricane falls contractors have to cancel building materials supply for a short period of time.
