  9. Script

  10. Receptionist: Dr. Carter's Office.

  11. Ronald: Yes, I'd like to make an appointment to see Dr. Carter, please.

  12. Receptionist: Is this your first visit?

  13. Ronald: Yes it is.

  14. Receptionist: Okay. Could I have your name please?

  15. Ronald: Yes. My name is Ronald Schuller.

  16. Receptionist: And may I ask who referred you to our office?

  17. Ronald: Uh, I drove past your office yesterday.

  18. Receptionist: Okay. How about the day after tomorrow on Wednesday at 4:00 O'clock?

  19. Ronald: Uh. Do you happen to have an opening in the morning? I usually pick up my kids from school around that time.

  20. Receptionist: Okay. Um . . . how about Tuesday at 8:00 A.M. or Thursday at 8:15 A.M.?

  21. Ronald: Uh, do you have anything earlier, like 7:30?

  22. Receptionist: No. I'm sorry.

  23. Ronald: Well, in that case, Thursday would be fine.

  24. Receptionist: Okay. Could I have your phone number please?

  25. Ronald: It's 643-0547.

  26. Receptionist: Alright. And what's the nature of your visit?

  27. Ronald: Uh . . .

  28. Receptionist: Yes sir.

  29. Ronald: Well, to tell the truth, I fell from a ladder two days ago while painting my house, and I sprained my ankle when my foot landed in a paint can. I suffered a few scratches on my hands and knees, but I'm most concerned that the swelling in my ankle hasn't gone down yet.

  30. Receptionist: Well, did you put ice on it immediately after this happened?

  31. Ronald: Well yeah. I just filled the paint can with ice and . . .

  32. Receptionist: And so after you removed the paint can . . . Sir, sir, Mr. Schuller, are you still there?

  33. Ronald: Well that's part of the problem. Uh, the paint can is still on my foot.

  34. Receptionist: Look, Mr. Schuller. Please come in today. I don't think your case can wait.

  35. Doctor’s Office

  36. Script

  37. I was feeling a little under the weather the other day, so I decided to visit my doctor before things got worse. I called her in the morning, and I made an appointment for 9:30 a.m. When I arrived at her office, I had to fill out some insurance paperwork and a sheet describing my current medical condition, along with the symptoms I was feeling. After a few minutes, the nurse called my name and took me back to one of their examination rooms. She took my vital signs including my temperature and blood pressure, and then I waited until the doctor came in. After looking me over and asking a few questions, the doctor's diagnosis was that I had a bacterial infection. She wrote me out a prescription for some medication, which I was supposed to take two times a day. After the exam, I went back to the reception area and paid the bill.

  38. Hospital

  39. Script

  40. Last week, I suddenly became really sick, and I was feeling a great deal of pain in my side, so my father rushed me to the emergency room at the nearest hospital. I started feeling a strong pain in my side, and there wasn't any sign that I was getting better. We didn't feel that we needed to call an ambulance because we lived so close to the hospital. When we arrived, my dad helped me into the emergency room, and the doctor on duty realized I had appendicitis. I was quickly admitted to the hospital. A nurse took my vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, and pulse) while my dad filled out all the necessary paperwork. Soon thereafter, I was prepared for emergency surgery. The surgery didn't last that long, but I felt sore afterwards. I was released the following day from the hospital, and I was back on my feet in a couple of days. No one likes to visit a hospital, but I'm glad we have them. Having good health insurance is also extremely important because medical costs are so expensive. This is particularly true for international students who are traveling abroad.
