Ivan: That's right. And that's important because adult capybaras have fur, but it isn't very thick so they can get sunburnt quite easily. However, with their frequent swims, and their mud baths, they are well able to protect their skin from the hot South American climate.

Interviewer: Ivan, I could listen to you for hours, but, unfortunately, we're out of time for today. Join us again tomorrow when we … (fade)

Speaker A

It was my grandson, Jamie, who got me onto it. He works with computers. Anyway, one day, while I was at his house visiting, I asked him what he was doing on the computer. Well, I was quite surprised when he said he was buying his airline tickets to Bali. Since then, I’ve never been back to a travel agent. Hotels, car rentals, plane tickets, you name it, I make all my reservations on this website.

Speaker B

Sure, my parents worry about me sometimes. They say, ‘George, why can’t you go to normal places like your friends do?’ I give them the same answer every time: if I wanted to go to a place full of English people, I’d spend my holiday in England. As it happens, however, I want to get off the beaten track…try different food, meet the l ocals. Travelling is all about experiencing new cultures.

Speaker C

When I was a youngster, I had to go on those family holidays—you know, visiting places like Blackpool, Cornwall or Devon. They might have been popular, but two weeks stuck in a tiny caravan with Mum, Dad and my little brother was certainly not my cup of tea. Then, as I got older, my mates and I would go to all the ‘in’ holi day spots like Faliraki or Marmaris. All that has changed now. Every year, off I go. No one to worry about, it’s just me and a fortnight of peace and quiet.

Speaker D

I know ‘travelling can broaden the mind’; my parent s have been telling me that for years. And, yes, the places they took me and my sister to when we were young were indeed ‘cultural experiences’. But .. I don’t get a lot of time off from work each year. That’s why I want to go somewhere where things are really busy. I want to be with the ‘in crowd’ when I’m on holiday.

Speaker E

Last summer, the wife and I went to Portugal. A colleague at work told me about this nice, quiet little bed and breakfast place in Olhao, a Portuguese coastal village. I looked it up on the Net, and it looked nice, so I booked it for ten nights. When we got there, the place looked nothing like it had online. I mean, it was falling down. I tell you, that will never happen again…five-star or nothing, I say!

Speaker F

I’ve always loved travelling. My parents used to take us away every year. One year it was crowded Santorini and the next it was the wilds of Canada. I got the travelling bug from Mum and Dad, I guess. I never dreamt that travelling would be the way I earned my living, though! I’m incredibly lucky.

Young man: Excuse me, I wonder if you could help me?

Secretary: Well, I can certainly try. What can I do for you?

Young man: A friend told me about your youth centre and I thought I'd walk over here and get some more information.

Secretary: Well, that's wonderful. Is your friend a member here at the centre?

Young man: Yes, his name's Dwayne Marks. He joined two months ago.

Secretary: Oh, of course! I know Dwayne. And you're right. I remember when he signed up in August. So, now. What kind of information were you looking for?

Young man: To begin with, I was wondering what other sports you have on offer besides basketball. That's what Dwayne plays, but I'm not very good at it. Actually, I'm not very keen on any type of team sport.

Secretary: That shouldn’t be a problem. Here, at the centre, we've got sports for everyone. We've got a lovely Olympic-size pool for those who are into swimming, two tennis courts and two squash courts, and we've also got top facilities for table tennis.

Young man: That's very impressive! Next, I wanted to know how much it costs to join the centre. I meant to ask Dwayne, but I forgot. It must be very expensive.

Secretary: Expensive? No, not really. For a year's membership it costs 250 pounds for adults and 200 pounds for students. If I remember correctly, Dwayne paid 180 pounds for his membership because he signed up for our summer offer. But, I'm afraid that now it's October and …

Young man: I should have come with Dwayne when he registered, but I was away doing volunteer work at a summer camp and …

Secretary: Look, I'll tell you what. Because you're a friendof Dwayne's, I can let you register for the summer price. How would that be?

Young man: Oh, that would be great! That's very kind of you.

Secretary: The only thing is that you'd have to register on Friday, OK? I'll be here until six in the evening, so perhaps you could come in after your classes.

Young man: Yes, that would be fine. Do I need to bring anything else with me…I mean besides the money?

Secretary: Yes, you'll need a note signed by one of your parents and some sort of ID, a birth certificate or your student card would be fine.

Young man: Right. That's fantastic. I'll see you on Friday then Ms…Ms…

Secretary: Turner. And your name is?

Young man: Eric. Eric Thomas.

Secretary: All right, Eric. We'll see you two days from now!

Presenter (male): Hello, and welcome to Green Matters. If you remember, on last week’s programme we were discussing the value of recycling. Well, today, we are going to follow up that topic with something along the same lines…comp osting. Now, for those of you who aren’t too sure what that means, we have with us, Tracy Peters. Tracy, thanks for coming in to talk to us.

Tracy: Hi, Gavin, thanks for having me.

Presenter: So, first Tracy. How is it that you know so much about composting—

are you a farmer or a professional gardener or…

Tracy: No, no, I’m totally an amateur, but over the years I’ve learnt about what makes a garden grow. I have what Americans like to call ‘a green thumb’, or ‘green fingers’ as we here in the UK prefer to call it. My garden is my pride and joy. I spend hours in it, and hours well-spent if you ask me.

Presenter: I wish I had the time to have a garden, but, well, you know how it is.

Tracy: No excuses, Gavin! You don’t have to have a huge garden like mine, lots of people I know are quite happy with their window boxes and pot plants. That type of gardening takes no time at all and yet the sense of pleasure, and pride, that one gets from watching something they have planted grow is simply amazing.

Presenter: And an important part of getting things to grow and flourish is composting, right?

Tracy: Indeed it is.

Presenter: So, why don’t you start by telling us just exactly what composting is, Tracy?

Tracy: Good idea. Composting is a way to improve the soil in which your plants grow. Compost is made from all kinds of different things… all-natural things. Some people like to call compost ‘gardener’s gold’ because it is so benefici al. There is simply nothing better for plants than compost.

Presenter: Is composting hard to do, Tracy. Is it expensive or time-consuming?

Tracy: None of the above, Gavin. It’s a piece of cake—noth ing to it. Step one, get yourself a good strong bin. It can be plastic, metal, wooden, whatever your preference. I’d avoid glass bins, though. Step two, find a good location for your compost bin. Make sure the site is level and easy to get to. Put the bin directly on top of the soil, not on cement.

Presenter: Why not on cement?

Tracy: Well, because you want worms and other beneficial organisms to be able to get into the compost. Step three, add your composting ingredients. There are two basic categories: brown materials which include things like leaves, straw and paper, and green materials that consist of things such as grass and vegetable peelings.

Presenter: Is there anything that you shouldn’t add to the bin?

Tracy: Good question, and yes. Adding any kind of dairy products, sour milk, spoilt yoghurt, that type of thing will slow down the composting process. The compost will still be usable but…

Presenter: But it wouldn’t be dangerous, would it?

Tracy: No, it wouldn’t. However, adding meats or any kind of animal fats is a definite no-no. These types of material can actually cause poisoning or disease. Step four…
