Canberra the capital of the country is situated in the Australian Capital Territory. It is a modern rapidly expanding city built around artificially-created Lake Burley Griffin. It's thought the name Canberra is based on an Aboriginal name for the area “Kamberra” or “Kamber”.
In 1908 the sparsely populated area was chosen to be the capital of Australia. In 1911 an international competition to design the new capital city was held. It was won by American architect Walter Burley Griffin. The focal point of the plan was Capital Hill from which all the main avenues were to radiate. Many of the streets were seen as lying-in concentric circles. Construction began in 1913 but was interrupted by World War I. Only in 1927 the national parliament moved here from Melbourne, which had been its temporary seat since 1901. Old Parliament House served as the home of Federal Parliament during sixty years. It was the social, geographic and political heart of the capital. The new Parliament House was opened in 1988. Now within the New Parliament House there are many painting, statues, busts and works of arts connected with the development of Australia.
Canberra is a quiet city. All the government buildings are situated there. There are no industrial plants in the city. The population of the city is about 300,000.
Today Canberra has become a major tourist destination for Australians and international visitors. Major landmarks in Canberra include the Church of Saint John the Baptist (1840s), Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet, located in Lake Burley Griffin, and the Australian War Memorial, which includes a museum and an art gallery. Other sites include the National Library (I960), the Australian National Gallery (1982), housing works by Australian and other artists, the High Court of Australia building and the civic center. Major educational institutions and academic organizations in the Canberra area are the Australian National University (1946), Canberra School of Music (1965), the University of Canberra (1990, formerly Canberra College of Advanced Education), the Australian Defence Force Academy (1981), the Australian Academy of Science (1954), and the Australian Academy of the Humanities (1969). Mount Stromlo Observatory is also here. Canberra serves as the headquarters of Australia's largest scientific research body, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.
