Applied Mechanics Department

I am a student of RC-5, the “Applied Mechanics Department”. This department has a great and glorious history. It was founded in 1878. Our university was called “The Emperor’s Moscow Technical School”. The first head of “Applied Mechanics Department” was professor Fyodor Orlov. Different subjects were studied here, such as machines and structure design, theory of mechanisms, strength of materials and others. Professor Orlov prepared and published the first Russian text-book on the strength of materials. The next head of “Applied Mechanics Department” was professor Peter Khudyakov. He was a brilliant lecturer. The students called him “The King of Strength of Materials”. There is a special memorial class-room, named after P.Khudyakov in Bauman University. In 1930 our department was divided in two: the “Strength of Materials Department” and “Machine Construction Department”. The head of the “Strength of Materials Department” was professor Eugeny Tikhomirov. After the World War II, in 1948 a young professor Sergey Ponomaryov became a head of the “Strength of Materials Department” . He managed to organize a group of talented young scientists, who made great amount of research and solved many problems on strength, dynamics and plastic behavior of materials and structures. Finally, in 1959, they published a huge 3-volume hand-book “The Strength Analysis in Machine Building”.

The authors were:

  1. Prof. Sergey Ponomaryov

  2. Prof. Vadim Biderman

  3. Prof. Konstantin Likharev

  4. Prof. Vladimir Makushin

  5. Prof. Nikolay Malinin

  6. Prof. Vsevolod Feodosyev.

All of them were granted with Lenin Award in 1960. After that our department became well-known all over the USSR and abroad. It was the center of sciences dealing with strength and dynamics of deformable systems.

To do their best at preparing and training professional specialists in problems of strength of materials, Sergey Ponomarev decided to organize the speciality “Dynamics and Strength of Materials”. The first group of students started its education in 1961. They graduated from Bauman Moscow Technical School in 1967, so this year we meet our 46-th graduate specialists.

Now, our department trains its students for two separate specializations:

  1. Theoretical researchers

  2. Experimental researchers.

We get profound mathematical training for 6 terms which is a custom for University programs. We get a full-scale engineering education as well.

Many of our graduates continue their education as post-graduates and prepare their PhD dissertations. Most of the lecturers of “Applied Mechanics Department” now are its own graduates.

Now our department is a big scientific and educational center. More than 60 lecturers, engineers, IT and other specialists are working here. The staff consists of 7 full professors and nearly 30 associate professors, who run all sorts of classes on different subjects. According to the subject several divisions are organized. They are:

  1. Strength of Materials

  2. Structural Mechanics

  3. Dynamics of Machines

  4. Plasticity and Creep

  5. Testing Equipment

  6. Experimental Methods

All these branches of activity are supervised by our leading professors. They manage to run significant scientific work and to teach their students both classical theories and recent achievements in their area.

We get a great deal of experimental activities during our education. The Strength of Materials Lab is now reconstructed and gradually becomes a modern laboratory equipped with proper testing machines. This year the Applied Mechanics Department has got an additional new laboratory for dynamical research. Now modern computerized equipment is being installed there. I believe we’ll get the chance to operate it during our labs. Frequently our teachers ask us to help them, because all documentation is coming in English. So, our knowledge of professional English is very helpful. Above all we are the generation that grew up with computer and sometimes we can make things work, being a help for noble professors.

This year we celebrate the 134-th anniversary of Applied Mechanics Department. We are very proud of being the students of such a glorious and forward-looking chair. We prepared a special show for our annual meeting ‘KAPYATNIK’ this spring.
