VISUAL ATTENTION

Visual attention is the psychological process that helps us to transform chaotic visual scenes into ordered information.

We use it all the time (and especially in the hidden

objects games!)

VISUAL SEARCH

Can you find a panda?

Visual search is a process of active scanning of the visual environment for a particular object – target, among other objects – distractors.

VISUAL SEARCH

Can you find a panda?

Visual search is a process of active scanning of the visual environment for a particular object – target, among other objects – distractors.

SUBSEQUENT SEARCH

MISSES

The effect has been found in 1960 by

surgeons

Other tumors may be missed in an X-ray if

the first tumor has already been found

So surgeons found the underlying disease and missed the others

RAPID SERIAL VISUAL PRESENTATION METHOD

Is used in «Spritz» speed reading

RSVP helps to study the timing of vision

Stimulus, like numbers, letters or pictures, are

rapidly presented (15-75 milliseconds) at one location of the visual field

THE PROCEDURE

You will see a series of letters, in quick succession, with two numbers (between 1 and 9) interspersed.

Your task is to remember the SECOND number presented.

The presentation is like:

ATTENTIONAL BLINK

Discribed in 1992 by Raymond, Shapiro and Arnell

People found the first target, but they typically failed to find the second one if it appeared in 200 to 500 milliseconds to the first

T1 and T2 – targets, numbers – distractors.

1 second of the presentation,

We have to find the two targets by focusing at the center of the screen.

POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS

One of the most famous is the limited-capacity attentional resources theory

Other explanation refers to inability to keep appropriate attentional control

or

Uncertainty and confusion of identification the targets
