My University

Perm State Technical University is one of the largest technical higher educational institutions in Russia. It is well-known in this country and abroad. University consists of 10 faculties including electrical engineering, civil engineering, chemico-technological and others. It also comprises Regional Centre of New Informational Technologies, Regional Innovatory Centre, Regional Scientific Centre “Energetics and Automatics” and many other training and scientific subdivisions.

More than 90000 engineers of different specialities graduated from the University for its 50-years history. At present about 30000 students study here. Nearly 1500 teachers deliver lectures and provide practical training.

The University is a large research centre. It carries out intensive researches in many fields of science and technology, for example, in automation, information processing and control, control systems and means and so on. Students take an active part in different Olympiads and competitions. The University cooperates with scientific and educational centers in the USA, France, Germany and Austria. There are a lot of joint projects: academic exchanges, educational projects, joint researches and international exhibitions.

The University has excellent educational, research and public facilities. It has got a lot of well-equipped laboratories and experimental workshops. Many students are involved in the activities of Student Club, Sport Club and Technical Society.

Students are proud of their University. They write: “I am glad that I study in the PSTU and I believe in my bright tomorrow!” (N. Litushko, TK-04). “During studying at the University my life completely changed. I made the acquaintances with interesting people and found some good friends. Some new hobbies and interests also appeared in my life”… M. Russkikh, TK-04.

Today in the time of high technologies and innovations my University prepares the new generation of highly-skilled specialists.

My faculty

“I am Marina Russkikh. I am a student of the electrical engineering faculty (TK-04). And I am proud of my faculty. But the choice of my future profession was made uneasily. Earlier I planned to become an interpreter and study in Moscow. But then I noticed that telecommunications were becoming more and more popular and I made up my mind to become an electrical engineer.”

The electrical engineering faculty is one of the largest and popular faculties of our University. Today about 3500 full-time and correspondence students study here. It consists of 5 departments:

–the department “Automatics and telemechanics”;

–the department “Microprocessor means of automation”;

–the department “Information technologies and automatized systems”;

–the department “Designing and technology of electrical insulation”;

–the department “Designing and technology of radio-electronic means”.

The faculty prepares engineers of different specialities:

–power supply;

–integrated information protection;

–control and informatics in technical systems and many others. Such specialists are in great demand now.

During first years students are taught general subjects, such as

mathematics, physics, informatics and foreign languages. Then they have courses in special disciplines. “My favorite subject is computer technologies” (V. Laptev, TK-04). Students take part in different events: research conferences, amateur art festivals, sport competitions etc.

Intensive researches are carried out at the faculty. There are 40 training and 20 research laboratories here. They are equipped with up-to-date computers and instruments. The faculty cooperates with leading Perm firms where students can get their practical training. “I am glad that my faculty laid

Management and computer science in technical systems (АТ)

Last year I finished a secondary school and entered the Perm State Technical University. I always interested in informatics and computers so I chose the electrical engineering faculty. This faculty trains specialists in

the fields of hardware and software, computer and mobile communications, information protection and so on. The graduates of the electrical engineering faculty are highly requested. They work at different industrial enterprises, banks, firms, design bureaus and research institutes. Some of them enter a post-graduate course and carry out researches at the faculty departments.

The departments are well-equipped with up-to-date hardware and software to train highly-qualified specialists. There are a number of training and research labs, for example, “Data transmission systems”, “Automation systems”, “Electronics and microelectronics”, “Multiservice networks” and many others. The labs are equipped with modern computers, measuring instruments and communication devices.

Junior students study general subjects: mathematics, physics, foreign languages, informatics and others. My favourite subject is programming. Senior students study professional subjects: microelectronics, microprocessors, digital transmission systems, computer-aided designing and so on.

We attend lectures, do laboratory works and tests, prepare course papers. Our students take part in various conferences, seminars and competitions. They make reports and publish articles.

There are 5 departments at the faculty. The department of “Automatics and telemechanics” trains engineers of 4 specialities. My speciality is “Management and computer science in technical systems”. These specialists have got deep knowledge in the fields of microelectronics, automation means, microprocessor devices and software. Our graduates are able to design modern automatic and telemechanic systems, technological process control systems, complex telecommunication systems and so on. Besides, graduates have got good language training and sufficient experience of practical activity at our city enterprises. A. Schavelev (undergraduate of a group AT-04) considers, “the good student receives the most valuable skill in a modern and quickly developing branch of manufacture and science – competence and ability to cope with difficult situations. So such a specialist has to be a successful person in the modern world.”

Telecommunication (TK)

This speciality is closely connected with designing and maintenance of:

–communication networks and commutation systems;

–optical communication means;

–means and systems of mobile radio-communication, teleand radiobroadcasting.

Our students get practical skills and carry out complex experiments in specialized laboratories “Commutation systems” and “Telecommunication networks”.

“My specialty today is one of the most important and perspective. People in our world couldn’t image their life without computers, Internet, information technologies and mobile phones. Large companies can’t work without intelligent networks. In a word, we’ll have a wide range of job opportunities” (A. Malshakova, TK-04). Another undergraduate of TK-04 (N. Litushenko) also declares: “My specialty is prestige and claimed.

It is very interesting and highly demanded. It’s closely connected with computers, hardware, software, data bases and up-to-date networking technologies.

Engineers of this speciality design and introduce different systems of information protection. They also provide their maintenance and servicing. Students get top-quality training in the field of latest data protection techniques. They investigate sources and channels of information leak. Our students carry out numerous effectiveness checks of information protection means and systems in our labs “Information security” and “Secu-
