ACCORDING ТО ONE OLD SONG, love and marriage go together like а horse and carriage. These days, however, а longlasting marriage may be almost as hard to find as а horse and carriage on our busy streets. Statistically, it is now more likely that а marriage will end in divorce than continue in а loving relationship. It makes you wonder if getting married is worth the effort.

Is it simply the case that marriage has become а gamble with less than а 50% chance of success? Not really, say researchers at the Newport Institute, who have discovered that there are clear clues to what makes а successful marriage. The Newport researchers have been conducting а study of is married couples for the past ten years. They started with 50 pairs of newly-weds and interviewed them every six months. During that time, 11 of the couples dropped out of the study, 15 couples split up and 24 couples stayed married. The researchers were delighted that so many of their couples stayed together, but they don' t think that it was simply а matter of luck.

One clear sign of а happy relationship is the frequent use of ‘wе' by а couple. This is one indication that the couple speaks with а single voice about their experiences. Another clue is how past experiences are described. The happily

of their best memories because they went out and bought some really different clothing and had а crazy time.

Another couple (по longer married) ended up blaming each other for everything going wrong during the holiday.

Researchers have also noticed that individuals in successful marriages tend to talk about their spouses in much more positive ways. They focus on accomplishments. They often mention something new they enjoy doing now because of their partner. They also seem to be willing to change in ways that allow the couple to do things together. In marriages that агеn't working, there is more focus on self. One of the individuals typically insists that he or she will not stop doing something despite the fact that it is а source of conflict. Sometimes one of them will say that he or she actually prefers it that the other has separate interests.

When the researchers asked couples what advice they would give to younger people thinking about getting married, they got some revealing answers.

Among those who eventually got divorced, the man would often give а response that was quite different from the woman's. It was obvious that these individuals had really different views about marriage. Among those who remained married, the answers were more similar and

А: Oh, I’m sure it will. Is there anything in particular that you're worried about? Н: Well, yes. I’m not sure how the staff will respond to me as а manager. After all, I am quite а bit younger than most of them.

А: Oh, I wouldn't worry too much about that. 1 expect that some of them will be а bit hostile со you at first but they'll soon get used to the fact that you' re the boss. It' s important that you appear confident in your position, even if you don' t feel very confident. The reason that you got this position at your age is that you' re good and you must remember that.

Adverbial Clauses. Clauses of Time.

Clauses of time are introduced by: after, as, as long as, as soon as, just as, once, sinсе, when, before, by the time (= before, not later than), while, until/till (= up to the time when), the moment (that), whenever, every time, immediately etc. (Не bought а villa as soon as he got the money.)

Тime clauses follow the rule of the sequence of tenses; that is, when the verb of the main clause is in а present or future form, the verb of the time clause is in а present form, and when the verb of the main clause is in а past form, the verb of the time clause is in а past form too. Note that will is never used in clauses of time. ( I’ll give it to уоu when уоu tell mе why уоu want it. She had finished reading before they came home. )

When the time clause precedes the main clause, а comma is used. When the time clause follows, nо comma is used. ( When he finishes, he can gо home. Не can gо home when he finishes. )

when (time conjunction) + present tense

( When he comes, he'II tell

уоu.)

when (question word) + will/would

(When will he come?)

If is used for things which may happen. (Wait for те if I’m late.)

When is used for things which are sure to happen. (I'Il be back when I finish shopping.)

15. Underline the appropriate time phrase and put the verbs into correct tenses.
