Conversational activities (Discussion) include reading a poem by Emma Lazarus about the Statue of Liberty and discussing the questions in groups of four or by the whole class (Unit 3); commenting on some peculiar statements from the reading; explaining some peculiar words or phrases (Dixie, the Big Easy, hillbilly, spiritual, McUniversity-style education etc (Unit 4); drive-through; rags-to-riches hero; hogster; pioneer; establishment (Unit5); metropolis, megalopolis; the Gold Rush, Silicon Valley, frontier ; the environment and wilderness-concerned society (Unit 6).

Discussion

Below is a poem by Emma Lazarus. Read the poem and discuss the questions that follow in groups of four.

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen* giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning; and her name

Mother of Exile*. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities* frame.

Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp! Cries she

With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled* masses yearning* to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming* shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed* to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
