CORRELATION OF CULTURAL PHENOMENA “CHURCH” AND “SHRINE” IN THE ARMENIAN FOLK CHRISTIANITY

To our days the canon of St. Sahak Partev concerning visiting special lo-calities to fulfill rituals on festive dates, is preserved. The ritual ceremonies connected with shrines and saint places maintained best, while in many cases not only places of shrines but also mythology related to them have been modi-fied. Considerable changes underwent terms of pilgrimages, although the very tradition of visiting sacral places in the dates of the most important Church feasts has been preserved almost intact.

The differentiation of notions “jham” (parish church) and “vank” (sacral place, locality of pilgrimage) has remained among the folk, although there are also some other terms for the latter. Respecting old sacralities and the ancestors’ tradition of pilgrimage, the modern believer is willing to reconstruct shrines. But if he/she constructs a new one, the shrine is built not far from the habita-tion. In our days certain disagreement exists between folk and professional architectural terms in designating sacral constructions.
