Going Large: Massive MIMO

The aim of the article is to present the reader with an overview of Massive MIMO technology, its advantages and potential, as well as establish new scientific problems that has emerged along with it.

The research method is description.

The author states that massive MIMO is a scaled-up version of MIMO technology that reaps all its benefits and provides a foundation for future broadband networks that will be energy-efficient, secure and robust. The underlying principals of massive MIMO, like spatial multiplexing, are also described.

Massive MIMO technology is designed to increase the capacity, improve the radiated energy efficiency, be built out of inexpensive, low-powered components, significantly reduce the latency on the air interface and increase robustness against intentional or unintentional jamming of signal. The author goes into technical details about how these features are to be achieved and implemented.

Even though massive MIMO makes some problems in communication theory less relevant, it poses new problems as well. The author comments on some of the most important ones such as the challenges of manufacturing large amounts of low-cost hardware, development of working prototypes and deployment scenarios.

The article describes the period of time between 2010s and nowadays.

The author’s conclusion is that massive MIMO is a key to enabling new and better cellular systems with huge advantages and energy-efficiency. However, there is still a plethora of scientific problems that has to be solved in order to unlock the full potential of massive MIMO.
