The experimental apparatus consists of a home-built AFM using a linearized commercial XY piezo scanner (Physical Instruments P-733-2D) which allows raster-scan imaging of areas of up to 30 x 30 ^m2 in size at a scan speed of typically 0.3 mm/s. The z-axis is controlled by a separate linear piezo scanner (Physical Instruments P-753) with a scan range of 12 ^m. The cantilever is mounted on a mirror holder to allow all rotational degrees offreedom to be adjusted with sufficient precision 1°). We note, that because of the integrated version of our height sensing method, the spatial stability of the cantilever base is less stringent than in normal AFM instruments. Basically, if the tip is in contact with the substrate, the mechanical loop is defined by the distance of the tip to the height sensor, which is on the order of 10 (see below).
The AFM is housed inside an environmental chamber. We use a steady flow of nitrogen gas to ensure that the relative humidity stays below 1%. The pressure in the chamber is close to athmospheric pressure. The low-humidity conditions prevent tribochemical consumption of the silicon tip material and improve the tip-lifetimes dramatically (S3).
The silicon cantilever sensors, Fig. S1, built in house, comprise a capacitive platform for applying load forces by electrostatic means and a resistive read sensor made of low-doped Si for thermoelectrically measuring the relative motion of the tip with respect to the sample (S4, S5). A soft spring response with a spring constant C ~ 0.1 N/m is obtained using a flexible hinge section at the base of the cantilever. Here, the Si is thinned to a thickness of ~ 180 nm whereas the thickness of the rest of the cantilever is ~ 450 nm. The length of the cantilever is ~ 65 ^m, and the resonance frequency of the fundamental bending mode is ~ 50 kHz. The Si tip with an apex radius of ~ 5 nm is placed at the center of a connecting structure between the capacitive platform and the U-shaped support of the read sensor. The height of the tip is 500-700 nm.

Fig. S1. Scanning electron micrograph of a micro fabricated cantilever. The spring constant is controlled by the hinge thickness of w 180 nm. Two heaters are integrated into the cantilever structure for heating the tip and for sensing the topography. The tip is located directly above the tip heater. An electrostatic platform in the center provides a large capacitance to the sample and therefore an effective actuation mechanism to pull the tip into contact and to control the applied force.
The tip is approached to its rest position at a distance of 300 nm above the surface by a piezo stage. For read and write operations the tip is approached from the rest position to the sample by applying an electric potential between the conducting Si substrate and the capacitive platform, which causes the cantilever to bend towards the sample. The approach motion is monitored using the resistive read sensor by exploiting the thermo-resistive effect as described, e.g., in (S5). The read resistor is heated to 200 °C using a constant voltage excitation. The temperature of the heater depends on the width of the air gap between the heater and the sample which acts as a cooling path. The temperature, in turn, determines the heater resistance which is measured via the heater current using a virtual ground current to voltage converter. Thus the heater current of the Si heater is a direct measure of the vertical distance of the cantilever structure to a coarse grained average sample plane. For imaging the topography, an effective load force of < 3nN is applied. The plane of the sample is corrected linearly by moving the z-position of the lever in proportion to the x and y coordinates. No other feedback system is applied during imaging. The thermal time constant of the reader is 10 yielding a 16 kHz system bandwidth for topographic height sensing, and the overall noise level corresponds to a 0.05 nmrms resolution of the tip-sample distance measurement.
