Text VI What do we know about global warming?

We can not imagine our life without energy, therefore we continue looking for new safe energy sources.

Energy choices must take into account the progressive depletion of fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil) and the impact they have on the environment, notably greenhouse gas emissions.

Greenpeace warns that if we continue to burn fossil fuels at the same rate as we do today, global warming will reach catastrophic levels.

The ozone layer is a special type of oxygen around the earth. It protects the Earth from ultraviolet radiation which comes from the Sun. Aerosol sprays, exhaust fumes, and other chemicals destroy the ozone layer making a huge hole in it.

Now, too much ultraviolet radiation enters the Earth’s atmosphere through this hole. It is well known that ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer and some other serious diseases.

Fossil fuel-burning power plants and different factories produce a great amount of carbon dioxide by burning coal, gas, oil and wood. Volcanoes, trees, animals and people also produce natural greenhouse gases.

All these have formed a blanket around the Earth. This blanket is constantly trapping solar radiation heat. It results in the greenhouse effect, which causes serious climate changes.

Text VII Russia’s approach to npp decommissioning

Up to 2020 Russia expects to decommission 24 reactor units, as they reach the end of their working lives.

In 1991 the Ministry of Atomic Energy adopted a regulatory document setting out its technical policy and concept of decommissioning.

The Russian policy assumes the principle that decommissioning ordinarily takes place at the end of the lifetime of a unit, or when economic or technical criteria mean that safe operation is no longer possible.

Russia’s policy recognizes that decommissioning follows 4 main phases:

1) shut-down and preparation; standard decontamination of the equipment.

2) preparation for monitored long-term storage; isolation of highly radioactive equipment; dismantling of low-active equipment; removal of radioactive waste and its preparation for long-term storage at the plant.

3) long-term monitored storage of the isolated equipment.

4) final dismantling of the unit and preparation for long-term storage at the plant.

These four phases are likely to take around 30-40 years. It is an optimal period, as it corresponds to the expected operating lifetime of a new reactor unit.
