UNIT II

TEXT Our University

I study at the Obninsk State Technical University for Nuclear Power Engineering. This higher educational institution was established in 1957 as a part-time department of Moscow Physics and Power Engineering Institute to train specialists for the new branch of science – nuclear physics. Then in 1985 it became the Institute of Nuclear Power Engineering. Among its founders were such prominent scientists as Glasanov (the first rector), Liashenko, Leipunsky, Marchuk and others.

Since 2002 it has enjoyed the status of technical university. Now it offers a wide range of subjects linked with nuclear physics, cybernetics, medicine, and economics. There are four faculties at our university: the Faculty of Cybernetics, the Physics and Power Engineering Faculty, the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, and the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

The Physics and Power Engineering Faculty trains engineers mainly for nuclear power plants, i.e. specialists in reactor design, non-destructive testing, and dosimetry; the Faculty of Cybernetics trains specialists in applied mathematics and automatic control systems; the others – in ecology, biology, psychology, medicine, and management.

The Obninsk State Technical University for Nuclear Power Engineering is well known in our country and abroad. The graduates from our university work not only at nuclear power plants, but also in different branches of industry, agriculture, and medicine.
