ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
Life appeared on our planet several billion years ago and was nourished by the earth’s matter. Living things formed the biosphere (or ecosphere) – a global network of various habitats, where all processes are in constant balanced interaction.
But this perfect and delicate balance has begun to break down through man's destructive activity. From the early days of his existence man strove to widen his knowledge about the nature, to employ its forces, phenomena and resources and then to enhance his domination of it. And he succeeded. But this success brought about global problems that now threaten to become irreversible: ozone depletion, acid rains, mass deforestation, pollution, and as a consequence reducing specific variety of plants and animals. Ecological problems, caused by modern social development call for urgent measures and qualified specialists. That is why the qualification of environmental engineer is becoming necessary today.
The ecological training at the Siberian Automobile and Highway Academy presupposes special emphasis on road transport ecology. This trend is very specific and needs a separate handling. Construction and operation of roads impacts the biosphere in a number of ways. By the roads there is a high concentration of CO (carbon monoxide) – a pollutant directly hazardous for human health. Road transport contributes 12% to annual anthropogenic emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide). Trace gases such as CO2, methane CH4, and dinitrogen N2O, contained in emissions are not directly harmful to human health. But they contribute to a change in the natural composition of the atmosphere and evoke mechanism referred to as “anthropogenic greenhouse effect”. Roads pass through natural ecosystems, breaking their structure by putting pressure upon subsoil waters; they are also the reason for deforestation. Roads cross migratory paths of animals that causes them trouble and traumatism. One more factor with an impact on the environment is noise.
The graduates of the qualification will be able to work at various industrial enterprises, in the bodies monitoring ecological safety, and scientific research centres. The study will enable them to solve a number of ecological tasks, for example:
technological solutions for reprocessing, recycling and regeneration of industrial, transport, municipal and domestic wastes;
technical solutions and equipment for storing, purification and reclamation of high-hazard and compound wastes, ecologically clean

productions;
engineering problems of water resources and sewage cleaning;
certification of products and technologies for meeting ecological requirements;
monitoring and environmental inspection of industrial waste handling.
