The State Moscow University was founded in 1755 and bears the name of one of the most outstanding Russian scientists Mikhail Lomonosov. He made a lot of discoveries in the field of chemistry, physics, etc. He was also a writer and a poet. Mikhail Lomonosov was born in an old Russian town of Kholmogory in the North of Russia. When he was 16, he came to Moscow on foot as he was eager to study. He entered Moscow Greek-Latin Academy which he graduated from with honours and gradually became one of the greatest Russian scientists. The construction of the main building of Moscow State University on the Sparrow Hills began in 1949 and the first students entered it on the 1st of September, 1953. The University complex occupies an enormous territory of 168 hectares. The main building is 240 m high and has 36 floors. The splendid complex was designed by architects Rudnev, Chernyshov and Abrosimov.
To look at all auditoriums and laboratories one would have to walk 145 km and the University is still being expanded. Moscow State University has 40 departments, which are attended by 35 thousand students not only from Russia, but from other countries as well. There are 4 astronomic observatories, a large botanic garden, 3 museums, two big scientific libraries and 5 scientific institutes in the University. Besides, one can find everything necessary for students not only to study, but also to live on the large territory of the University campus. Moscow State University is the largest centre of higher education in our country and one of the largest in the world.
One of the best panoramic views over Moscow is from the Sparrow Hills, just across the river from Luzhniki. Most of the city spreads out before you. There is a ski-jump which runs down to the river. The view from here is breathtaking especially at night when Moscow is flooded by light. All remarkable sights of the city are clearly seen in good weather, in particular the spires and cupolas of the Kremlin, which is situated 10 km far from the Sparrow Hills. You can also see “the Moscow City”- the site of modern sky-scrapers recently built not far from the centre of Moscow. Two of these sky-scrapers sharing a common name “Federation” are absolute champions of Europe in height which equals 373 metres.
Now we are back to the centre of Moscow. Our tour is coming to an end. Thank you.
