Further on ahead of us we can see a magnificent structure which is the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (Christ the Saviour Cathedral). It is a memorial to the Patriotic War of 1812 when Russian people with cross in their hearts and arms in their hands defeated the enemy. Alexander the First issued a Manifesto in which he ordered to erect a memorial cathedral in honour of this event. At first The Cathedral was supposed to be built on the Sparrow·Hills (the chief architect Vitberg). But very soon due to many reasons the project was held up. Only many years later, in 1883 the Cathedral built in a new place by another architect (Konstantin Ton), was consecrated. It was Emperor Nicolas the First who chose himself this new place in the centre of Moscow not far from the Kremlin.

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour became the biggest memorial to the battle of the Russian people against the Napoleonic hordes. Many outstanding Russian architects, painters, sculptors and builders took part in its construction. In the gallery one can see 177 marble boards with the names of those who were killed in different battles of that war. Unfortunately, after the October Revolution of 1917, the Russian Orthodox Church was separated from the state, which became atheistic. In 1931 Joseph Stalin ordered to blow up the Cathedral. Very little was saved after the explosion. Joseph Stalin′s idea was to erect the Palace of Soviets in the place of the Cathedral. But at first there were some problems connected with the shifting sands and then the beginning of the 2nd World War didn′t let his dreams come true. Only in 1960 a huge swimming-pool called ′Moskva′ was built in this place. In 1994 the Moscow city government decided to rebuild the Cathedral. It took 5 years to build it anew and it was consecrated in the year 2000.

Christ the Saviour Cathedral is the biggest temple of the Russian Orthodox Church.

It can admit about 10 thousand people.
