Vocabulary Practice

Ex. 1. Give English equivalents of the following Russian words and word combinations.

имя, отчество, фамилия, тезка, девичья фамилия, прозвище, ласкательное имя, называть по имени, назвать чьим-либо именем (в честь кого-либо), взять прежнюю фамилию, ругать, оскорблять кого-либо

Ex. 2. Give Russian equivalents of the following English words and word combinations.

Ex. 9. Look through the proverbs. Make up situations to explain their meaning.

1. A good name is better than riches. Доброе имя лучше богатства.

2. Be born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth. Родиться в рубашке.

3. Better be born lucky than rich. Не родись красивым, а родись счастливым.

4. A man is as old as he feels. Возраст определяется не годами, а настроением человека.

5. Every man desires to live long; but no man would be old. Все хотят жить долго, но никто не хочет стареть.

6. As like as two peas in a pod. Как две капли воды.

Ex. 10. Compose dialogues based on the following imaginary situations.

1. Your granny tells you about her sister (brother) you’ve never seen. You want to know all the details of her (his) life in a distant city.

2. Your elder brother (sister) describes his (her) bride’s (bridegroom’s) family to you. As he (she) is going to live with his (her) in-laws, you ask a lot of questions.

3. Tell your friend about your little nephew (niece).

4. You talk with your grandmother (aunt) whom you have come to visit. You want to know how she met and married your grandfather (uncle).

5. An old lady of your acquaintance will be eighty years old tomorrow. You discuss with your mother the age of the old lady’s family.
