The Opera and Ballet Theater is one of the main remarkable sights and an architectural symbol of Novosibirsk, being the main theater of Siberia.
Construction of the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater started in 1931. Originally the building was designed as a House of Science and Culture, where festive events were to take place place, providing for parades of people to be held onstage, as well as for tractors and cars to be driven on it. The idea of design was a theater with transforming elements of the interior space, which would provide immense freedom to directors when staging a play or a performance. The spectators seals were meant to be arranged for staging water pantomimes. The round hall could be used as a theater, circus or planetarium. Unfortunately, due to the challenges related to acoustics and optics, a decision was taken to built a regular-type theater.
The theater building, which is now a memorial historical and architectural building, is the largest theater structure in Russia. Its total area and its volume exceed those of the Bolshoy Theater of Russia . For such size the theater is called “Siberian Colliseum”.
After the reconstruction completed in 2005, the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater has the most advanced theater furnishings and machinery in Russia.
