LIVING IN A BIG CITY
It goes without saying that life in a big city has a lot of disadvantages. The first is air and water pollution. Besides, life in a big city is more stressful and noisier than that in the country. Drivers suffer from accidents and car crashes, pedestrians curse the rush hours, constant queuing and irregularity of public transport and clerks are scared to lose their jobs. Practically everyone grumbles about high rent for tiny flats and the cost of living is very high too.
Whatever the disadvantages are, city-dwellers wouldn’t swap life in the city for anything in the world. They suppose the monotony and harmony of rural provincial existence would be boring for them. They would certainly miss the excitement of city life. Firstly, life in the city is more anonymous than in the country where everybody knows you and expects you to live and behave in a certain way. Secondly, some people find the city an easier place to make friends in. Another reason, why most of us like living in the city is because there is so much entertainment (concerts, performances, films, festivals). There are a lot of museums and art galleries, gyms, discos and nightclubs.
It is necessary to say that the city-dwellers are more advantaged in education. The students have museums classes and excursions. They can attend lectures and preparatory courses and have more chances to enter a university. After graduating from university the residents of big cities are more likely to find a prestigious and well-paid job, than the outsiders.
I am a city boy/girl and I can’t do without all the hustle and bustle of St-Petersburg. I agree with Samuel Johnson’s words who said, “When a man is tired of London he is tired of life”. To my mind you need some relaxing break in the country and then may come back to a modern city with its fun, pleasure, comfort and large potential to fulfill your plans. As for me…
