lit.Vaska listens, but continues eating. (Ivan Krylov. Cat and Cook).

In the fable, the cat named Vaska calmly continues eating the stolen chicken, while the cook appeals to his sense of decency <…> The quotation is used jocularly when a person reasons with an offender instead of dealing with him firmly.

Дядя Степа (заглавие детского стихотворения С.Михалкова — 1936)

Uncle Stepa (title of a poem for children by Sergei Mikhalkov). In Sergei Mikhalkov’s poem Uncle Stepa is a very tall and extremely courageous militiaman. The phr. is used jokingly with reference to very tall men.

Эллочка-людоедка {Людоедка Эллочка} (И.Ильф и Е.Петров. Двенадцать стульев, гл.22 — 1928).

One of the characters in Ilya Ilf’s and Yevgeny Petrov’s novel “The Twelve Chairs” named Ellochka (diminutive of Ella) Shchukina has a vocabulary of about 30 words, consisting mainly of fashionable jargon and interjections, which nonetheless is sufficient for her needs: Ellochka is as primitive as a cannibal. Hence her nickname: Ellochka the Cannibal. The name is applied to persons whose limited, crude vocabulary abounds in slang.

Manilov-mentality (from the name of one of the characters in Nikolai Gogol’s “Dead Souls”,vol.1, ch.2, a sickeningly sentimental landowner given to hare-brained scheming). Used allusively of empty prattle, daydreaming, visionary scheming and wishful thinking.

lit.Monkey’s labour (Ivan Krylov. The Monkey)

In the fable, a monkey, envious of the respect enjoyed by a hard-working peasant, busies itself with a block of wood: it lifts the but all these useless efforts fail to attract attention. The phr. is used of useless work.
