6. Work with a partner. Make up a conversation using the cue cards below.

CUE CARD I

Your friend rejects the idea of getting higher education.

As support to the claim that he /she should attend college offer some evidence:

a) college/university graduates earn more;

b) they exert greater influence upon other people;

c) they achieve greater success, etc.

CUE CARD II

Parent calling a school to find out if

a) there are mixed (able and less able children together) classes in the school;

b) the curriculum is adapted to the practical needs of the children;

c) there is a dress code there.

CUE CARD III

Parent telling a child that he/she doesn't have money to pay for the child's education at college.

You are discussing possible alternatives:

finding part-time job and studying by correspondence;

giving up higher education and enrolling in evening classes, etc.

7. Role-play the situation: You are a board of governors. You are worried about poor achievements of the children at the school and bad relations between the students and the teachers.

Speakers 1, 2. Teacher representatives.

Speakers 3, 4, 5. Parent representatives.

Speakers 6, 7, 8. Student representatives.

Speaker 9. Head master.

Each member of the governing body is to suggest some idea as to how to improve the situation. Use the model below:

Teacher representative: Unmotivated students should be dismissed.

Parent representative: A new system of evaluating students’ knowledge should be introduced.

Student representative: Unpopular subjects like Geometry, Chemistry, etc should be eliminated.

Head Master: Among other things, we should make our students wear school uniforms as they create a sense of belonging.

Be ready to support and develop your suggestion.

ARGUMENTS IN PRACTICE

Defending or rejecting claims

From the following list of claims select the ones which are a) the claims of value; b) the claims of policy; c) the claims of fact. Which of them are most controversial? Try to defend or reject each of them.

  1. Secondary school should offer practical courses rather than book-learning.

  1. In Russia entrance examinations to universities should be abolished. Admission should be based on scholastic achievement in secondary school.

  1. University students should be grouped according to scholastic ability and motivation.

  1. Private universities have higher graduation standards.

  1. The quality education is the birthright of every citizen of Russia.

  1. State-supported schools cannot teach religion.

  1. A dress code should be introduced for all state schools.

  1. Education is the best investment of your money.

  1. Learning goes on everywhere and not only in classrooms under supervision of a teacher.

  1. Tutorial system is the most effective way of teaching students.

  1. It is necessary to complete our education before getting married.

  1. Poor education and lack of skills contribute to criminal behaviour.
