II. Прочитайте и переведите текст: The Importance of Newspapers
Newspapers are just as important for a democratic society today as they were two centuries ago, maybe more. The public's need for information has grown at a steadily accelerating pace, because people's lives have become more complex and more interdependent. It is increasingly hard for us to cope with the enormous flood of information that comes.
Citizens must have the feeling that they can cope with events that they understand. A great profusion of unconnected bits of information may create a feeling of disorder and chaos, which can lead to civic apathy.
Perhaps the greatest danger to a democratic system is the public feeling* that things are beyond control, that the individual is powerless to influence the march of history. Among the mass media that connect the individual to the world, the newspaper has a unique ability to provoke discussion, to create debate and to offer plans for positive action. Thus it links the people's own individual interests with the interests of society.
The
printed word helps to give meaning to events, to connect facts

in time and place, to make generalizations.
Everyone is aware that what appears in the newspaper appears before the whole community. The press records the life of the community and is its traditional voice. But because it records events of highly specialized interest, it also helps to maintain individuality.
Today the press is at the acme of power and prosperity. Every day newspapers are read by millions of adults. Substantially more people get their news from newspapers than from TV or radio. The political influence of newspapers remains high.
Advertisers invest more money in newspapers than in TV or radio combined. In the US, newspapers are the third largest manufacturing industry.
An expanding and more prosperous population offers a great opportunity for the growth of newspapers. The progress in education since the end of World War II has helped develop this factor. More people were able to afford newspaper subscription. There has been no threat in competition from TV during the last years.
