Mineral exploration may be considered to be the effort to find and acquire a maximum number of new economic mineral deposits or ore bodies with a minimum cost in a minimum amount of time.

Planning involves the fundamental questions – what, where, and how? The type and amount of metal or product required to satisfy executive policies will determine the program target. In order to make this decision, all available data must be processed and carefully studied. Although economics and politics are important, the critical item is geology. Without the regional geologic maps the selection of favorable areas is difficult.

Exploration of a selected favorable region can usually be divided into four stages: regional appraisal, detailed reconnaissance of favorable areas, detailed surface appraisal of target area, and detailed three-dimensional sampling and preliminary evaluation.

Several accepted methods or procedures are available for the appraisal during the different stages. Probably the most common approach is the examination of prospects described in the literature or documented in company files. New submittals may also be solicited.
