Communication

One hundred years ago telephone came into being and the communication industry, first launched by telegraph, began to swing into high gear. Although the achievements in the science of telecommunication over the past 100 years have been dramatic, we may expect a continuing growth in the years ahead as the tools of telecommunications become commonplace around the world and in outer space. So new interest in all aspects of communication arose in the last ten years, and everyone realized that communication is the key continuing human progress. The great accomplishments of the past decades – satellites, transistors, computers, colour television – have fired the imagination of scientists and businessmen who can visualize tremendous potentials for further development. Here are just a few special applications of telecommunications which industry experts foresee:

• Data and display terminals at home for education, information and to handle the needs of life and business. Small portable terminals for business use with audio coupling to any telephone.

• Long distance dialing anywhere in the world through more satellites, submarine cables, and land transmission systems.

• Personal radio telephones and mobile telephones in cars, trains, buses, airplanes as telephones as means of reaching the subscriber on the move.

• Simultaneous translation of languages during conversation. Later automatic translation.

• Digital transmission of all information, voice, data, and pictures will become possible through wide band optical transmission. The broad introduction of pulse code modulation.
