Automation of mail handling

Since the 1950’s research and development have been intensified to apply technology to handling of mails. Now mail centers are normally built in the style of factories and include all appropriate handling equipment.

Equipment used for loading and unloading sacks of mail, containers and parcels includes mobile belt conveyers, roller conveyers, forklift trucks, mobile and fixed cranes, etc. Handling equipment within buildings includes chain conveyers, horizontal and rising belt conveyers, various types of lifts.

The use of a wide range of equipment is necessary because of the varied handling characteristics of different types of mail at particular stages.

Distribution of mail is often monitored by close-circuit television which allows effective centralized control. Thus modern techniques enable to ensure a continuous mechanized mail flow with maximum productivity benefits.
