Данный сборник предназначен для студентов финального курса факультета лингвистики, обучающихся по направлениям 45.03.02 «Лингвистика», 45.05.01 «Перевод и переводоведение» для подготовки к практическим занятиям по дисциплине «Практикум по культуре речевого общения первого иностранного языка». Целью пособия является формирование лингвистической компетенции, а именно прагматической ее составляющей средствами лингвостилистического анализа. Пособие содержит художественные аутентичные тексты рассказов английских и американских писателей 20 века. Выбор авторов обусловлен их значимостью и вкладом в мировую англоязычную литературу, а также тем фактом, что произведения данных авторов будут предложены на государственный экзамен по английскому языку. |

augham
achieved great popularity and recognition for his masterful
storytelling, truthfulness, simple and clear wording. His style lacks
in metaphors, affection, or exaggeration.
In his autobiography, “The Summing Up,” published in 1938, when he was sixty-four, he explained, “I discovered my limitations and it seemed to me that the only sensible thing was to aim at what excellence I could within them.” These limitations, as he saw them, included “small power of imagination,” “no lyrical quality,” and “little gift of metaphor”.
Maugham’s gift lies in the powers of observation and the glittering precision that he brought to his moral dramas. “It seemed to me that I could see a great many things that other people missed,” he once wrote, with his characteristic understatement. The devastating conditions of the poor in London slums, the eccentric characters populating remote colonial outposts of the South Pacific, the treacherously hypocritical upper class: always looking on, Maugham set their stories down in his singularly unemotional style.
He is interested in contrasts which he finds in people’s characters and actions. Maugham’s stories are peculiar for acute psychological portrayal of characters and unexpected denouement. Another peculiarity is the presence of a narrator who observes his characters and reflects disinterestedly on tensions between conventionality and the risky search for self-fulfillment.
