Appendix 4 press in britain
A lot of people begin their day by reading the paper. In this way they learn what is going on in the world. Sometimes, however, they do not have the time to read the news carefully and must be satisfied with a quick look at the front page; at other times they may be in such a hurry that they have time only to look through the headlines.
Most newspapers have several sections. There are, in addition to the front page with the most important news, the sport section, book reviews, special articles on topics of interest, the amusement section, a business page, and the editorials.
The first function of newspapers is to give news. It is very interesting to know the difference between fact and opinion and to compare the space various newspapers give to the same news item. Some will give several columns to a murder case and a few lines to a really important event.
The Times, The Guardian and the Daily Telegraph are Britain’s quality newspapers. They are daily or Sunday newspapers aimed at educated readers. Quality papers are sometimes called serious papers. They tell a lot about what is going on in the world and contain a lot of detailed news articles, features and reviews written in a serious style.
The Mirror, The Express and The Daily Mail are the mass-circulation, popular papers or tabloids, so called because of their small size. These papers are read by less educated people and are more concerned with sex, violence, funny events and the private lives of film or TV stars than with national and interesting news. It is often said that the popular press aims to entertain its readers rather than inform them.
In addition to the 12 national daily newspapers there are 9 national papers which are published on Sundays. Most of the «Sundays» contain more reading matter than daily papers, and several of them also include «colour supplements» – separate colour magazines which contain photographically-illustrated feature articles.
Besides, nearly every area in Britain has one or more local newspapers.
Here are some facts about most well-known British newspapers and magazines:
Cosmopolitan, Cosmo (infml.) is a monthly magazine for women, produced in separate editions in the USA, the UK, and many other countries. It is aimed at young modern independent women and deals with subjects such as fashion, work, health, and sex.
The Express (the former name The Daily Express) is a British daily tabloid newspaper which usually supports the ideas of the Conservative Party.
The Daily Mail, also The Mail is a British daily tabloid newspaper which usually supports the ideas of the Conservative Party. It is a less serious newspaper than papers like The Times or The Guardian, but more serious than newspapers like The Sun.
The Daily Telegraph, also The Telegraph is a serious British daily newspaper, which usually supports the ideas of the Conservative party. Although many types of people read The Daily Telegraph, including many young business-people, the typical Telegraph reader is often thought of as a retired army officer with very old-fashioned, traditional ideas. The same company produces on Sundays The Sunday Telegraph.
The Guardian is a serious British daily newspaper known for its left wing opinion. The Guardian readers are middle class well-educated people who have left wing political opinions.
The Independent is a serious British daily newspaper which generally supports Liberal political ideas and usually opposes the Conservative Party. The same company produces a similar paper on Sundays called The Independent on Sunday.
The New Musical Express (NME) is a British music newspaper.
The News of the World is a British tabloid newspaper sold every Sunday, and which is known for printing shocking articles about famous people. It sells more copies than any other British newspaper.
The Mirror is a British daily tabloid newspaper. It usually supports the Labour Party. The same company, The Mirror Group Newspapers, produces a similar newspaper on Sundays called The Sunday Mirror.
The Sun is a British daily tabloid newspaper which sells more copies than many other daily newspapers in the UK. It generally supports right-wing and nationalist political ideas, although in the 1997 British election it supported Tony Blair and the Labour Party. It has articles about events in the news and politics, but many of its stories are about private lives of well-known people, such as the royal family, TV actors and sports players. Some people have criticized The Sun for making newspapers less intelligent and less concerned with important events or ideas. “Sun Reader” is an insulting expression for a person of little culture and strong right-wing opinions.
The Sunday Post, also The Post is a Scottish Sunday newspaper which supports traditional values and has many stories about ordinary people. It is very popular in Scotland and is also read by Scottish people in many other parts of the world.
The Sunday Sport is a British tabloid newspaper sold every Sunday which has almost no serious news stories but has many stories about sex and scandal. It is produced by the same company that produces The Sport during the week.
The Times is an old and famous British daily newspaper. It is a serious paper and generally supports fairly right-wing political ideas. At one time, especially before the television and radio, The Times had great influence on British political life, and many important people used to give their opinions by writing letters to The Times. It is now owned by Rupert Murdoch and some people think it is less important than it used to be.
The Sunday Times, a serious Sunday newspaper, was one of the first papers to be divided into sections, such as a Sport Section and a Business Section and is known for having a large number of these.
