Exercise 1 Read the following information and answer the questions.

Where could you find work?

Look around you

A job search, like charity, begins at home. Of all the various job sources, the most convenient—and, at times, the best—are your relatives, friends, and neighbors. So if you're in the job mar­ket, don't keep it quiet; part of your campaign is to let as many people as possible know that you are job-hunting. It is often a good idea to give the people you know copies of your resume. It helps them in talking about you to people they think can help you, and in addition, they can speed up the decision process by handing in the resume for you.

Volunteer work

It may seem strange, but occasionally it can be profitable for you to work for nothing. Volunteer work, like temporary work, is a way of meeting people. The more people you meet, the greater the possibility that someone will be able to point you in the direction of your dream job. Volunteer work can also give you the opportunity to improve skills that are not yet sufficiently developed.

Job fairs

Attend all job fairs. Job fairs can save you both time and money, and you can meet and interview with numerous companies that attend the fair. Bring plenty of resumes, dress profes­sionally, and plan on spending the day.

Direct personal campaign

You cannot claim to have done all that is possible to find work if you have not conducted a direct mail campaign. Your resume will be an integral part of this campaign, so once you have prepared the best possible resume, you are ready to start. It is a good idea to get involved in your own personal work-study program. Call the human resources director of the company you are interested in and explain that you are on a career finding mission. Make yourself available to assist one of their departments on a voluntary basis for a few weeks.
