Ботаника – это наука, изучающая растения. Многие сведения о растениях были известны людям с глубокой древности. В древние времена человек во многом зависел от природных ресурсов окружающей среды и уже тогда понял, что существует взаимосвязь между солнцем и растениями. Растения всегда были первой необходимостью для человека; поэтому растения и раньше не только собирались человеком, но и выращивались им, благодаря чему начало развиваться сельское хозяйство. Как стало известно позже, зеленые растения необходимы всему живому на Земле, т. к. они поглощают углекислый газ, продуцируют кислород, преобразуют солнечную энергию в химическую путем фотосинтеза. Растения, являясь автотрофами, используют энергию солнечного света для синтеза сложных органических соединений из простых неорганических веществ.
